Those of you who are of the larger sized, I am one so know how it feels on a 737 for those few hours on a 737.
A few months ago, on here, or AusBT, it was mentioned that it can be done, ie, if a person phoned up QF bookings and asked for the seat next to the flier to be empty, ie, that flier paid for that seat they occupy, and also pay for the seat next to them for themselves... in your case with JetConnect over the "ditch" or/ie, TT, has it succeeded for you in your case when you flew (past tense).
Thanks for your info/feedback.
I have also paid for Aud$50 (Aud$25x2 for window seats)... paws crossed for my wish.
After the trip next week, I will come back and relate my own case, fly out 04 Oct.

Yes I have purchased via Qantas a "comfort seat" which can only be done over the phone - last time was in march but only domestic.

Yes it works, and yes the seat will be kept free. The issue you will need to deal with on an aircraft with 3+3 seating is how to protect your seat from the person on the other side. They will assume it is a spare seat and will want to share the space with you. It is easier for aircraft where there are just two seats by themselves (A330s for example).

You can always break the ice with something along the lines of 'it will be a more comfortable flight because I have purchased both these seats today' or something. While the seat space for the second seat will be yours, maybe a good move to share the centre tray table if you can - a good place to store drinks and empty meal trays while waiting for them to be collected, and a way of sharing the extra space you have.

I can understand the reason why you might want a "comfort" seat, but not the maths or value. You still sit in the same Y seat, but do not have another pax sitting next to you. For the price of 2 Y seats, would it not be better to buy a J seat? This at least gives you the extra conform due to the larger seat width and pitch.

you get the extra width with 2 x economy seats, and the price difference can be substantial... $400 to New Zealand vs $1000 in business class.

I appreciate this might be value if the Y fares are on sale. A SYD-AKL Y fare on 15 Jan 2015 on QF is as low as $385, while the J fare is $799. So 2 x Y fares are only $29 less than the J fare.

I have another trip, 737 in J from ADL to CHC 07 Oct, coming back on the 777 in J on EK. Booked all 4 sectors on QF.
The one above, is Sat 04 Oct. I don't mind if that empty seat gets proverbially occupied by half the person sitting on the other side of the empty seat.
So long as it works, ok, thanks.
Will come back to relate how the QF FF points and QF SC appear, if I have to phone up to get them manually posted, ie, to get the QF FF points and QF SC for my own seat, and the empty one I paid for.
Have also got JQ10 on Tue this week, SYD to MEL, so will taste J on JQi.

It should be automatic that you get the SC and points for both seats - but we know what the QF IT folks are like.

you will need to call for the SC and points for the second seat.

Don't the "comfort seats" not have some of the taxes and fees charged ? So in reality it ends up at less than 2x the regular Y price ?

That's correct. No taxes on the second seat. The taxes are mostly based on a per person basis, not per seat.

This one for Drsmithy, I already have QP up to end of the year, and these flights are all this year.
I get your point, that its only $29 difference.
If I didn't have QP, I would pay the extra to go J rather than buy 2 disc Y for the (1)my self and (2)comfort.
If the points don't automatically appear, I will ring up the QF FF centre.

Very few people book the full Y fare, and a lot of the people here book Red E-Deals. For example, a SYD-PER Red E-Deal can be around $259 (say 19 November). And, keep in mind, the comfort seat is cheaper than the fare (you don't pay the taxes on it), and a J seat on the same route is $1829, for $450 or so, you're saving $1379, not $29.

Depends on the original Y fare booked, but I dare say the difference is more substantial than you think. (A Flexi Saver SYD-PER is $595, so you'd be looking at around $900 or so, still a massive saving).

You should be able to lift up the armrest and have more space.

Not quite twice the cost of 2 x regular economy seats as you only pay the taxes on one seat.

Does anyone know if you pay the fuel surcharge on the comfort seat?

Just a thank you to all who replied: My QF Extra Seat Request $ paid

So far ADL SYD AKL sections worked.
Next one will be way back to Au and that QF FF points and QF SCs get posted.
Paws crossed!
