QF fuel fines based on travel class

I had heard about some airlines implementing differential fuel fines based on class of travel. Until this evening didn't know QF practice this. Not ex-AUS, but for fares ex-SIN the SIN-Oz fare has a $57 SGD differential one way, just noticed this when looking at a J award SIN-MEL. The taxes for this flight came in at about $255 AUD - one way - surprisingly high, at
least compared to return MEL-SIN-MEL in J/Y class taxes which total $340AUD.

You learn something every day.

You are correct, a one-way SIN-SYD WHY award has SGD264 in

Using ITA (ITA Software: Login) shows YQ of USD151 for the Y booking and USD191 for a J booking. (Y+ ex SIN is USD171).

I believe it has something to do with the "bigger" fuel foot print the premium seats incur.

Of course premium seats don't incur the bigger fuel foot print if they are purchased in Australia.

I did work out a way around it .... as I already had a one-way award ticket MEL-SIN. Best to rebook that with the return sector. The 5,000 pt rebooking fee seems better than the extra $95AUD in +++'s, had I booked the SIN-MEL on a separate booking as I was originally going to do.

Rather than pay a 5000 point rebooking fee, why not book the SIN-Oz over the phone with QF reservations in Australia. That way you pay a 2500 booking fee but still get the ticket issued in Australia under Australian fines

BA do the same selective fuel fines depending on class of travel.

Qantas has been pretty sneaky with fuel fines ex-SIN, they've been going up considerably over the last few months, now they have the class charge.

Yes I will probably be moving to SIN soon, so I am taking a keen interest in fuel fines/redemptions for getting back to MEL.

Unfortunately but not unsurprisingly, QF have $100SGD more in +++'s than SQ on return Y flights ($214SGD more in J). Although QF total fares are usually less, that doesn't help for award bookings where it just pure gouging on the +++'s.

[A J booking SIN-MEL-SIN is now 120,000 pts + $550 AUD on QF compared to 76,500 pts + $370AUD on SQ].

for my comments earlier this year regarding Ex-SIN fuel fines.

I think it's interesting that Qantas has left ex-Australia fares out of fuel surcharge increases, but continue to tinker with them for bookings made in most other countries. My belief with that is that Qantas realises that Australians are fed up with Fuel Fines and the lack of transparency, and that there could/will be some pretty serious enforcement or revolt coming through the system soon.

Note that Europe, Ireland, Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, United Kingdom and Vietnam also get the "preferential" fuel fine treatment for different classes when you purchase tickets there. Some are in the process of being implemented - others already have it applying to fares.
