I had myself and Mrs Batesy booked on a domestic leg of an international flight (QF74) SYD-MEL in October. We booked it as it was a cheap option and we could get breakfast in the SYD F lounge. I logged into my account today and they have changed me to a domestic flight 15 minutes earlier than the original flight. No phone call, no email, no nothing.

It irks me that they can change my flight details as they see fit but if I want to change my flights I have to pay additional fees to do so. It also irks me that I had no contact and I am a Platinum FF. Thats my rant today. Should I contact them and seek an explanation?

Give them a call and see if you can change back. I know QF009 had something similar happen recently so maybe they moved you to accommodate a through travelling PAX?

Doing a search on SYD-MEL for 19 October (and a few days either side) QF 74 is not listed. Doing a search SFO-MEL for the same date, it gives me SFO-SYD on QF 74, and then domestic connections to MEL. So I'm guessing that you won't be getting transferred back to QF 74, as it won't be operating the sector.

I think you should go ballistic!!!!

Let's start with a demand that they put the original service back on the schedule and give you the pick of ANY seat (the coughpit sounds nice), plus hot and cold champagne, noise-cancelling headphones, his-and-hers matching pyjamas, Neil what's-his-name to personally cook and serve breakfast, and First-class SC's and points for you both.

Fine. I am taking the puss (as our neighbours across the bug dutch might say), but he started it. Qantas seem to be a bit hit and miss with sending details of minor scheduling changes to the punters, and as October is a long way away it might not have triggered the necessary action in the system.

Cheers,

Andrew

If the aircraft is no longer operating the service, it seems futile to have a big tantrum. One could, quite rightfully, object to having been given the silent treatment, but making a huge drama out of it would be utterly pointless.

Given that it is over 3 months away and is such a minor schedule change I agree with acampbell that their not having contacted to let the passenger know that the flight details have changed yet is quite reasonable

They would contact prior to departure if no contact was made by the passenger

Very similar thing happened to me.... was booked on QF73 from MEL-SYD and then noticed I had been moved to a domestic leg.

There was another intl connecting operating, so I rang QF and they moved me onto it, no questions asked.

Nevertheless, no phone call to me first, despite travel being very soon!

Thanks Andrew. I am fairly certain that I did not pull out the DYKWIA card or was demanding anything from QF, all I stated was that it irks me that the airline can do this with no contact, whereas if I want to change my travel arrangements with them its a costly and difficult exercise. I certainly am not demanding anything more than what I originally paid for.

Sheesh, it's over three months away! Give them a little bit of time to do it, perhaps they are calling people in flight order and they haven't got to your flight yet...

Thanks for the sheesh. I am not being or doing any of the following.
  • Making a drama out of this.
  • DYKWIA
  • Demanding compensation or anything that I am not entitled to from Qantas.
  • Being unreasonable in my belief that I should by now have been contacted by the airline.

I am surprised that they do not automate this process - I guess their automated email processes are too busy sending me info on the Anyseat opportunities...

Batesy, me old mate. I wasn't having a pop at you .... the he I referred to was someone else who had been slavishly awarded by Qantas for stamping their feet about a trifling matter (IMHO). I just felt unable to contribute to that thread without crossing the line into personal ridicule, hence the unsubtle dig here.

In addition, your inconvenience in being shifted 15 minutes in time compares poorly to my recent SYD/LAX being cancelled 3 days out and re-routed via BNE. I then had to get to the airport an hour earlier, line up with the plebs at International Connections, fly domestic to BNE, transfer to Int via train, spend more time lining up with plebs, wait 5 hours in the QC due to delays, miss my connection in LAX, line up for an hour in front of a non-manned Continental desk, enjoy lunch in the terminal (!) whilst waiting for the next available connection, and finally getting to my hotel in Houston 32 hours after leaving home.

Qantas (actually my incompetent TA) did inform me of that change .... but too late for me to re-book on the other SYD/LAX service. coughs!

So, I'm sure you and I (and he) are all the more relaxed now that we have got our trivial problems off our chests. But let's move on to more important topics - like the criminal "Anyseat" award scam.

Cheers,

Andrew

What a stressful day - you should have been upgraded to 1st. Or perhaps found a jump sea in the coughpit. You didn't just lose your seat - they managed to lose your entire plane! :D

I agree with Batesy that Qantas should have informed him. It is only courteous, even if 3 months out. I assume that if you fly domestic to Sydney, even 15 earlier, you will still have to clear the international barriers before getting to the Qantas club for breakfast.

My beef with Qantas is that I booked a Sunday night flight QF776 from Perth to Melbourne which usually gets in to Melbourne between 11pm and midnight. Qantas changed the departure time, and therefore the arrival time to 1am (on a school night!). They notified me, but I would not have booked a flight that gets in that late.

Should you bother complaining to Qantas? No, that would be a waste of time (life). They are the big guys and we are the little guys (and gals).

The Frequent Flyer Concierge team takes the hard work out of finding reward seat availability. Using their expert knowledge and specialised tools, they'll help you book a great trip that maximises the value for your points.

In my experience if QF changes the flight and it doesn't suit they will rebook you on another flight of your choice even if no fare class available - ie they will put you on hold, phone yield management, extract the seats and rebook you. For a while seats will show in fare bucket but don't get too excited as the system still treats you as per original fare code!
