QF International Upgrade Help from 'SALE' Q, N fares

Hello,

I'm a QF WP - but clearly a rookie when it comes to QF international upgrades.

So flying to NZ in October - MQL-SYD (Q), SYD-AKL (Q) ... then ZQN-MEL (N), MEL-MQL (N)

Now - I have not realised that INTERNATIONAL Q and N economy fare categories are not eligible for upgrade to business via Classic Upgrade Rewards ... (I think I am correct here??)

That would be why the two international sectors have the upgrade button unavailable ... correct? (below)

... with that in mind, do I have any options?

1. Being WP, is it possible to call via the call centre and request the upgrade? (did I read somewhere about a higher qty of points being required?)
OR

2. Is it possible to upgrade the actual fare from Economy Sale to Economy Saver? Which would then theoretically allow the 'Request Upgrade' button to reappear.

Thanks.

I do believe this is possible, but I'm unsure if the change fee will be waived. If you call in and get a good call center, I suspect they may be willing to just let you pay the fare difference to upgrade to a Saver fare. However, I don't believe you'll benefit from the reduced cancellation and change fees of this fare type

When booking through the Qantas website, it does tell you specifically if a fare type is upgradeable before booking.

Well there you go - I've never paid attention to that.

In my recently experience in a similar situation, I was able to place an upgrade request through the call centre. May be I am just lucky? (Fresh WP as well) Points deducted as per calculator.

You may also be able to change the flight online to the higher class (though there will be a change fee so $125 pp). Under Change (in Manage) you can usually select the same day and then will see the cost to up your fare to the next one.

In my case a stupid PE Saver (didn't look) so in the end I just made the change to J rather than to the other PE to allow the 'lottery'.

I did the same for a SYD-HNL flight coming up on Monday, I looked at upgrading the fare but not worth the gamble if the upgrade doesn't eventuate.

Although J loads are light so probably would have got it - but I'll be content with a shadow (have one thus far - Y is relatively full, but still Y9+).

Not On Qantas Ever. N/O/Q/E international booking classes are not eligible for points upgrade. (Credit: QF res Camberwell when it still existed)

Also noteworthy I received an email about bidding for an upgrade, and only my domestic connection (OOL-SYD) was eligible.

So the sale classes are also ineligible for bid upgrades as well as points.

See below ... the CHANGE button is unavailable ...

(on another note, these buttons in Manage My Booking being greyed out all the time are half the reason their call centre is clagged up - make the self serve system functional)

I'm trying the call centre.

Your only option if you want to go in the upgrade lottery is to buy up to a higher fare class to be eligible. Being Platinum gives no leverage in this regard (ie: they won't allow you to upgrade with more points from these fare types). Is it worth it to do so (remembering upgrades may not come through) - well that's only a calculation you can make imo.

I'm pretty sure all QF PE fare classes are upgradable, including all discount PE.
No - the only upgrade option for the PE I had booked was the Bid ($ and points). I had put in a bid but then saw it was cheaper to upgrade to J rather than chance it. QF9 Mel - Per. The original fare for J was much more expensive so that is why I booked PE.

I think that would be an IT glitch then.

Upgrading PE on MEL-PER to J is the same cost as flex Y to J and also earns basically the same SC - you'd have been better off saving the $ and booking flex Y.

There is a glitch for doing points upgrades from PE to J on routes like SYD-PER and MEL-PER and vice versa so that'd be why you couldn't upgrade. The contact centre can put these in manually.

So we have a conclusion ... called the call centre, and asked whether I could please move the fare category up on the SYD-AKL and ZQN-MEL sectors ... put on hold for a few minutes, consultant comes back and advises that it would be $300.

$175 to move up to the next fare category (Economy Saver I presume), plus a $125 change fee ... politely asked whether the change fee could please be waivered due to my request being within the 24 hour window from the time of booking ... she happily obliged.

Therefore, $175 paid ... and bingo, upgrades requested.

We had been tossing about about booking J - originally it was around $2.4K when I was booking on QF9 (ridiculous) so went for PE - not a fan of Y if I can avoid it/afford the alternative. It is now showing the same pricing as on the purely domestic ones so I just made the change and paid the extra for J - it was cheaper than my upgrade bid to make the change.

Hi
where you able to change travel class via manage my booking? I had a look and it is only letting me change to alternate flights in same booking class (Y). After doing some sums we realised the Lord is 150 status credits off platinum so looking at changing one of our legs for our next OS trip from Y to J and then green tier to get us over the line. If I have to call that’s fine but was hoping I could do online
Thanks

I would call anyway as they have much more flexibility for booking classes (ie it's not possible to book a specific class online, only the ones offered in each category). I think Expedia used to let you do this but not any more (and not relevant for an existing booking anyway).
