So more fun times for QF unfortunately. Today's QF21 MEL-DFW (and return QF22) cancelled.. but also the Wednesday 22/2 flight ALSO cancelled(and again, the 22). I was booked on the Wednesday flight so had been following. The reason given in the text is "Engineering Requirements."

While VIP Team couldn't exactly explain what this is about(and it's not for them to really know of course), I'm going to extrapolate a broken Dreamliner. I could be wrong, but I can't see why they'd cancel it otherwise. I feel Wednesday flight would have been fed by the DFW-MEL that was cancelled (as it has at times in the past on a Wednesday) which makes me assume this.

I was just thinking this morning, as I looked at the availability and seatmap that it was not massively fullly booked. Looked about 50-60% based on allocated seats - I know that may not mean terribly much, but most booking classes wide open, and well.. they could easily open a reward seat for me a week ago....

Not connecting the two in any way or suggesting that there is a link. I hadn't looked at the return flight loadings - there's potentially over 600 pax across at least 4 flights affected so it's not trivial.

Whatever the cause, this clearly affected hundreds of passengers at both ends. Full credit to QF for me at least - within about 45 mins I was rebooked in J on to SYD-DFW on the same day and while not an ideal seat, I'm still in J (and this was a reward seat they only opened for me last week!) so honestly I can't fault that. I am sure others did not do as well...

So, anyone else caught up in or have anything more on what might be going on?

I'm on it next week, so watching the situation closely.

I'm guessing there is a link between load and route. I assume, if a 787 goes tech, they try to pick the route that fits with the schedule and minimises the number of reaccommodations they have to make. And I think it's a fairly safe bet that MEL-DFW is the lowest yielding/least busy 787 route at the moment.

Thanks @TheInsider. Yep, I figured something was amiss with one shell, and it makes sense to pull it from a route with lower loads and potential protections in place.

Thanks. Been tracking this flight in anticipation of my upcoming roundtrip in May. Saw the double cancelations and found this thread. Any ideas how long this impact will last?

Understood! I was only concerned about a long-term impact to the new route. Always going to have day-of risk! Wonder how many GEnxs are laying around...

It's also one that should be fairly easy to reaccommodate pax on alternate routes, either DFW-SYD-MEL, or via LAX.

My QF93 flight on Friday 24/2 has been delayed by 12hrs. Missed connection in LAX. No option to take an earlier flight via a Syd. Qantas customer service not interested other than offering a downgrade from biz to economy. Very frustrating

Hi I have a QF93 flight coming up and I am not clear in relation to your comment of a 12 hour delay on February 24. Both Qantas and Flight Aware are showing the scheduled 11am departure time.
