This was the subject of a thread 2 years ago but I'm seeking the latest advice from the cognoscenti of this forum.
I'm looking at a SYD-LHR J award flight next year and seeking opinions.

CX 139000 points + $140 tax, No Chauffeur, A330/777 aircraft

QF 128000 points +$642 tax, Chauffeur, A380 aircraft

From my perspective, the Chauffeur is useful only at the SYD end (saves a $90 in cab fare). Is the J QF A380 experience worth the extra $500 in taxes over the J CX experience, which would cost an extra 11,000 points (which is less valuable to me than $500). Who wins in the seat/food/wine/IFE comparison.
The extra few hours in the HKG are not a disincentive to me.

Any advice on this first world dilemma would be welcome.

Been in CX J way more recently than the QF A380 J (Perth will limit you like that!!) and I'd say save the $500, well $410 after the cab fare is deducted.

Depending on how many hours you have in HKG you could sneak into the city. I gave myself 12 hours when I transited however my wife who went a week before me wasn't interested and wanted the minimum.

The CX Lounges in HKG are great.

If solo I would take CX without hesitation. Direct aisle access from every seat to begin...

CX for us ... Dec and then Jan for the trip back with half of that in F.

CX, hard product is light years ahead of the QF SkyBed II.
Soft product QF has better food and drink IMO. I find CX J food a bit ordinary but I do like their service.

I recently had a similar choice MEL-JFK and went with CX and I was very happy. Just be aware that a stopover in HK (24+ hours) will add more points than the 139k as it prices as w separate segments.

Well I am happy to say that I will be comparing both QF & CX in J in 5 weeks time. Woohoo!
QF SYD to JFK then return 6 weeks later CX to SYD via HK.

I have previously flown neither in J.

Save your $$$ and fly CX.
The flight service can be a bit mechanical and it is annoying when the hoard of elite upgrades invade the J cabin but CX is a great product both in the air and on the ground.
(Not so good for short haul or regional flights though - several steps down on all fronts)

And A trip report to mark your 1000th post?

Thank you all for your insight. The consensus is overwhelmingly CX. You cannot buy advice like this.
