SALE ENDS 2ND SEPTEMBER 2009

Given that on some routes you can get a skybed if you plan right, it's pretty good value IMHO.

What route would that be, if you don't mind sharing? I'm looking at a trip to HKG. Don't really mind ex- which city (Syd or Melb), but would be nice to get a J seat for Y+ price.

Thanks in advance!

MEL-HKG in particular. Try QF29/QF30 . This service was downgraded from being a 4 class service to being a 3 class service.

So often the planes are sold as J / W / Y, with Y being in PE seats/Economy, W being in Business seats (downstairs), and J being in F seats and J seats upstairs.

No guarantee that you will be seated in the better seats though!

Premium Economy

HKG-SYD-HKG works out to be roughly a bit over A$1200 as per QF website.
12 months validity. No specific travel dates specified. been on for some time.
Whereas SYD-HKG-SYD is A$1678  with travel dates specified!

I just made a dummy booking on qantas.com for MEL-HKG return, and they are selling seats for F/J/W/Y - does that mean it will be sold as a 4-class service on a 4-class aircraft?

Depends on the dates you are looking at. The downgrade is only for the next couple of months.

I'm looking at Aust (SYD/MEL/BNE) - HKG 31/10 and returning at the end of that week.

BNE-HKG doesn't have Y+, so getting a quote on qantas.com routes me via sydney or melbourne.

I've had a look at random dates between now and 31/10, seems all flights on the SYD-HKG and MEL-HKG are selling all 4 classes.

MEL-HKG is not selling as 4 class for a few more months.

First class recommences on MEL-HKG QF29 on Sunday 25 October.

SYD-HKG QF127 is operating as 4 class the whole time, except when operated by an A330 and is sold as 2 class.

Looking at methods of getting back to PER from HKG.

The round trip in Y+ via SYD is about 1000 HKGD more than the one way....
Both T class

Unfortunately overnight in HKG and a J* flight to SIN and the standard QF flights SIN-PER are a fair bit less expensive.

If MEL-HKG is not selling F (i.e. a 4-class product) then how come it comes out as an option to purchase F when i put in a booking/quote? In fact, they have prices for all 4-classes on that route in Oct/Nov. I'm rather confused, because what you are saying isn't consistent with what i'm seeing when i make a dummy booking.

Yes the booking engine is doing odd things.

It's because there is a published F fare for the route, but none of the planes are operating with F for the next few months.

If you follow through to the next screen you will see each flight shows:
Note : Your flight from Melbourne to Hong Kong will be in Business
Note : Your flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne will be in Business

It's an oddity of the booking system - they'll even offer to sell you F on an A330 on that route, which of course hasn't got F installed.

Do a dummy search, I used Sept 2 /9 MEL-LHR, select QF29 and QF30 and review the booking.

The information messages "The requested cabin class is full or not available in at least one of the options listed below. (5003 UI)" , "Note : Your flight from Melbourne to Hong Kong will be in Business" and "Note : Your flight from Hong Kong to Melbourne will be in Business " will appear, but it will still allow you to book the F fare.

Hi odoherty & Mal,

thanks for the clarification. Makes a lot of sense now. I progressed a dummy booking myself and came out with exactly as you mentioned.

Imagine somebody actually going ahead and paying for F on flights that sell the tickets but don't offer the product. I'm sure ignorant people like that do exist. Wonder what happens then?
