QF redemption EK metal (SIN/MEL) - how do they calculate Taxes/Levies/Surcharges??

Looking at SIN/MEL, I noticed that J rewards are 75,000 QF points (vs 68,000 on QF metal).

Ok maybe EK (and BA) are more 'expensive'.

But what's going on with taxes?

QF redemption on EK404 SIN-MEL is 75,000 points + SGD 84.40
whereas EK405 MEL-SIN is 75,000 points + AUD1,217.67 !!

Does anyone know why there's such a huge difference in taxes departing from MEL instead of SIN? (or maybe this is a glitch price on the SGD amount?)

If you look at the price, it’s normally detailed what you are paying for. Most likely airport charges and government fees.

Emirates charges massive surcharges on certain routes. It's just... a good way for them to get revenue unfortunately.

I think most posters are missing the point here. Yes EK charges huge surcharges, I don't think that is in dispute. The point is there are some exceptions to this which are quite odd.

No one knows why it's the case, but it is well known. Matt has talked about it in articles before.

My guess would be that it has something to do with loads. Lots of Australians with too many QF points look for MEL-SIN so EK is happy to fly them for an extortionate price, but for whatever reason they don't look for inward flights. Maybe because EK404 doesn't line up with incoming flights from Europe particularly well (early morning departure), but that's pure speculation on my part and probably wrong — EK405 is also a terrible flight with a 3am departure.

It’s not something that is related to the flight loads as it is dependent on ticket issue location (origin of the journey) and not the specific flight.

If you book a return out of MEL IIRC they charge the extortionate surcharges on SIN-MEL too whilst the opposite is the case if you book a return out of SIN (or indeed an open jaw, say SIN-KUl/MEL-SIN). But it’s specific to this flight pair issued out of SIN, if you book EK from SIN-DXB and beyond the full carrier surcharges apply.

By flight loads, I mean the specific route (SIN-MEL) is generally empty so they're happy to fill the plane with award seats by lowering surcharges.

It is a single flight, which confirms my theory.

It isn't to do the ticket issue location, because there are high surcharges on SIN-DXB:

As I indicated it IS to do with a combination of route and ticket location.

You ticket out of Melbourne, MEL-SIN-MEL then it will ticket both sectors with extortionate surcharges. Ticket out of SIN, SIN-MEL-SIN it will not charge carrier surcharges on either sector. Ticket anything else out of SIN it will. I’m tending to thinking it’s a glitch.
