I recently upgraded a DRW-BNE-CBR flight to business with my ever increasing supply of points (still only PS). Anyway work changed everything and had to fly back and even got the DRW-CBR flight.

The woman said she could transfer my upgrade, then told they couldn't because its within 24 hours and that I'd lose the poinhts as well. Anyway It was only 15k and those were the rules, i did say to the woman that the flight and upgrade i was cancelling was in fact in 5 days time.

Anyway 5 minutes later i got a call back telling me my points were refunded and sorry for the inconvenience.

So were they being nice or is it in fact that because i was bringing the flight forward 5 days the original cancellation is not within 24 hours.
I understand the upgrade is only available in QC.

You can get points refunded when you cancel an upgrade, but there's a 5,000 points fee per sector.

This will take a few days to come out, eg:

I once thought I got off scot-free with a cancellation until that dreaded fee a few days later which effectively negated the points anyway :)

There will be a 5K fee coming:

Refund of Unused Flight Upgrade Fee 5,000 Points per Upgrade

Well 10k returned is better than losing 15k i guess. I did see the fee on the website and though i might have escaped it though.... I'm guessing with points accumulation on CC's and Woolies as well, 5k isn't muchg for most people. Its another of the special features :-)
