Does anyone know if pre selecting a seat on the QF website wipe out any chance of getting an un asked for upgrade at checkin? I have a few times found myself in PE seating unexpectedly.
this Sunday I'm on QF 7 to DFW. There's a few good looking seats available to me, or do I leave it in the hope I get put somewhere even better?

There are no guarantees on this topic but the facts from QF are that it doesn't matter if you olci or pick seats ahead of time. We will now get multiple posts from people who did seat selection and didn't get upped whereas lower status pax who didn't preselect sears did get upped.

Of course, there's never any guarantees.
im off to select some seats!

...

However, is there people out there who preselected seats but got upped anyway?

Concur with Simongr. Likewise with Serfty, I have had numerous op-ups after having done OLCI (with seat pre-selection too!).

I managed to track down my lost flights spreadsheet for 2006 - 2008 and this week hope to join it with my 2009 - 2012 spreadsheet so might report back with my very small number of OpUps compared to flights (factoring in the availability of a higher cabin) - might be sad reading...

Unlike serfty though I have not had numerous OpUps..
I would love to one day be able to use "numerous" when describing opups ;)
So would I! :p

However, since I have been able to pre-select seating I have been doing so.

So, any of the few op-up's I have had in the last decade or has been out of a pre-selected seat.

In my experience it makes no difference. Indeed I got one BNE to Perth on Sunday, OLCI about 4 hours before, seat selection 2 weeks before. Was given row one at the gate.
Given the chances of an upgrade I believe you are much better off bagging the best you can early rather than face disappointment later.

Just did a quick look through 2009 - current:

Columns are: Carrier, Highest cabin No or Yes

Code:
Crr	No	Yes	Grand Total
AA	1	2	3
BA	2	3	5
CX	1	15	16
JQ	-	2	2
LA	-	1	1
QF	82	20	102
RJ	-	2	2

So out of 131 flights I was in the highest cabin for 45 of them. Of the remaining 86 flights I was on QF for 82 of them and scored 1 upgrade. I might have upgraded about 10 of those using points so maybe 1 out of 72 at best - and I was QF WP on about 65 of those at a minimum.

EDIT

Going to split this into a new thread:

its funny how well CX and KA treat OW Emerald members with upgrades...speaking from both your figure and my experience with them.

QF just doesn't come close..
