So,

Despite the awful value, I'm considering booking MEL-SYD-DFW-BUF next June. While this link https://www.qantas.com/au/en/freque...s/flights/american-airlines.html#using-points spruiks the multitude of points and SC earning opportunities when flying AA, however, the booking page indicates that no Status Credits are earned on AA legs. Don't understand this because paying in points is the same notion as using cash correct? Why are the AA leg/s crossed?

Any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

Air Sydney (some times know as Qantas) fly MEL-DFW non stop on We Fr Su. (no MEL-DFW on Mondays 17 Jun 24) In June 2024 schedules may be different. Air Sydney will divert you to Sydney when are other options, such as MEL-LAX. BNE-LAX.
This far out may not be the best pricing. But business class flights have less variation.

AA flights to BUF limited, so via DFW looks the most practical

Saying "awful value" is being generous.
Does it offer points and pay?
Does a small cash component show AA with SC earned?

Sorry, I think you missed the question. Why no SC on AA?
You should earn SC on AA depending on the booking class. Point+ Pay generally book into revenue classes.

Or, to put it another way, qantas.com is incorrectly evaluating SC/Point earn!

Note that if you do indeed book such, Qantas.com manage booking should show the booking class agaist each segment.

Points plus pay should earn SC on AA subject to what fare class it books in.

However, even after booking, the SC earn estimates in manage my booking often aren't accurate on partners (even when a qf codeshare). Use the tables and calculator to confirm.

Also note that when booking a qf codeshare on AA, the AA flight might not book into the same code as QF. I had one where the QF flights were flex but the AA flight (as a qf codeshare) ended up as standard economy.

FWIW, I would consider having a look at whether you could use the points on a flight to another port (lax, SFO) and book a cash flight to Buffalo

Read our AFF credit card guides and start earning more points now.

Using points only, does not earn SC, on all airlines that I know of, except only QF with PC (points club) have that.
OffT, if I used all points VAd, I know I would not earn any SC on that side.
I am not a PC member, but according to what is said on here, under PC, flying QF metal with a QF flight number, earns QFF SC.

Don't book this far out.

You're better off waiting until early next year, either an award seat will become available or prices might come down. Very unlikely they'll go up until very close to departure.

Not quite right Poochie.

Using points only to book a "Classic Reward" will not earn (except, as you note, points club members for QF flights). However, using points to book a flight offered - as others have noted - not as a classic reward, but for revenue fares (essentially points plus pay with $0 pay) then they will earn SC as per the revenue fare booked into.

This is an important distinction to make - and important with questions of this type.

So, classic reward (for a much lower cost) then no (bar exception above), but "use points" to pay for seats, that aren't classic rewards, will earn.
