I'm wondering what the best way of getting to KUL (from SYD) on QF (and hopefully QFF) is? A quick look at the QF booking site routes me through SIN with the entire journey taking as long as 18h, whereas a direct MH/D7 service takes only 8-10h.

Or is QF just not the way to go to KUL?

QF doesn't fly to KUL. So I think you need to go via SIN. Once you are at SIN maybe you can go via SQ,MH or something similar. Would be around 1 hour flight time.

If you want ot go direct, you will probably need to go via MH.

Get a flight to SIN and then a cheap ($20-$30) Jetstar Asia flight to KUL.

Yeah Jetstar Asia was great for the KUL-SIN-KUL flights. Cheap too!

Tempted to fly SYD-HKG for the 2x SC promotion and then an award flight HKG-KUL. Turn into a bit of status run...

3K SIN-KUL is ridiculously cheap, typically $2SGD plus taxes - adding a Plus bundle takes it to $60SGD 1 way working out to roughly $4.50AUD/SC which isn't too shabby.

These must be the 'rivers of gold' in Asia that AJ is referring to right?

I'm assuming that nets 10 SCs each way?

I have just done SYD-CGK-KUL; KUL-SIN-SYD
QF for the SYD legs
MH (Malaysian) for Jakarta Indonesia to KL
3K (Jetstar Asia) - apparently in discount business - and NO points or status (not even a free drink on the plane)
[all booked through the work travel system]

I got more points/SCs on the SIN-SYD leg.

It was good when JL had the tag flight SIN-KUL but alas no more.

There are also options to go via HKG or even BKK but I am not too keen on the A330 on the SYD-BKK leg. Depends on who is paying though and in which class.

As Malaysian don't do reciprical points for Velocity, will flights taken anytime soon be redeemable once MH joins Oneworld?

The options from going from KUL to SIN are huuuuuge. If you want to earn SC's, then 3K is the only way to do it, at least until MH joins OW.

Otherwise you've got Singapore Airlines, AirAsia, or Tiger.

done SYD-SIN-KUL 4 ties now with both MH and J*Asia connecting SIN-KUL, very short flight either option is ok, but points wise go for the Jet*asia

PS my next journey on this route BNE-SYD-SIN return will take me 45 SC's short of P1 thanks to the X2SC ;)

Based oh QF timetable, it usually requires overnight at SIN? but the return leading KUL Iin the afternoon is a good connection to arrive early AM +1. Is this correct or am I missing something? Unfortunately MH's timetable is so much more attractive but alas any points won't go anywhere right now.

Hi John.
I just flew the QF A330 on the HKG-MEL route. It seemed OK. Is there something about their 2-class config or you just don't particularly like the A330s?

Discount Business on 3K? no such thing unless flying on a 330.

If you want Qantas all the way Jetstar's required. Not seen any other Oneworld carrier on this sector when I looked. The Jetstar flights are not the most convenient if flying for business with meetings etc. Arrival and deparure times are more suited towards the leisure class.

It's for this reason I'm maintaining my VA Gold; so I can use SQ lounges. SQ uses better aircraft compared to MH, MI, AK and 3k. I feel.

For the short flight time of SIN-KUL, aircraft type would be a minor consideration.
I would go most convenient timing over aircraft.

The other point is SQ do charge a premium on that route compared to the other airlines.

For me there are a number of things.

- I really feel comfortable in a 747 and A380 and this aircraft is narrower and just does not quite feel the same
- There are only 4 bulkhead seats available (23AB and 23JK and I am excluding bassinet) and this bulkhead is nowhere near the comfort of the bulkhead on either a 747 or A380. I am only 5' 9" and the A & K bulkhead seats are very cramped. In fact one time when I came off a SIN-PER flight the circulation in my legs wasbad after I had spent the entire flight in window bulkhead. Exit rows are OK but one needs to pay for them now.

In my opinion it is OK for 5-6 hours but anything more than that and it is a struggle.
