Im flying to miami next week on qantas then american airlines in economy.

On the qantas website I read about the 1 bag to 7kg which is hardly anything but then there was a USA exemption

which states
Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item, such as a purse, briefcase, backpack or similar, per passenger. Medical assistance items (crutches, wheelchairs etc) are exempt from this requirement. These limits are strictly enforced at all airport security checkpoints and on board departing Qantas flights. Note: this new limitation only impacts on the allowance for First and Business Class customers. Economy Class limits are unaffected.

Does this mean that economy does not get a personal item?
Im carrying a shoulder bag as my mainbag
then a small crumpler laptop bag as my "personal item'

Have people flown economy to US on qantas had any problems

Economy general allowance is

First/Business/Premium Economy:
2 x 115cm (45in) bags or
1 x 115cm (45in) bag plus 1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid

Economy:
1 x 115cm (45in) bag or
1 x 185cm (73in) non rigid garment bag

There is a further restriction for travel to the USA that states that "Passengers may only carry on one bag plus a personal item"

This additional restriction does not affect economy class passenger since they are restricted to only 1 piece anyway. A business class passenger would normally be allowed 2 largish pieces of carry on baggage but the US restriction curtails this

I flew economy (Y+) to LAX on Friday. I had two bags - my wheelie (not crazy sized) and my laptop bag, which is not a bit Targus bag. No purse or handbag - the laptop bag was my "personal item". At check in, the agent asked to see my carry on bags, and wanted to weigh the wheelie. I said the laptop bag was probably heavier, but she didn't care about it.
When I got down to just before security at BNE, they also wanted to weigh just my wheelie bag. Very odd.
Had no problems with both those bags on United economy flight LAX-New Orleans on Friday. I did keep the laptop bag at my feet, and if a kind gent from the Palm Springs blodd bag hadn't have moved his bag, I would've had to have checked my wheelie. But, he moved his bag, and we were both in the front of economy, so plenty of room to have our bags in front of us.

I purchased one of these bags a year or so ago and now travel carry on only. The wheeled bag is 22" and it has a removable day pack which is considered a personal item.

I bought a redoxx airboss and am trying to do 1 bag as well
But it looks quite hard internationally when u carry a laptop as well

Airboss is 1.8kg
laptop is 2kg.

Im trying to carry a suit and enough for 2 weeks too.

Maca44 your bag is 4.2kg, how do you even carry much if the limit is 7kg or dont they check

Also had a strange experience at BNE international and weighing carry on. Was leaving late, and flying J on MH (which is supposed to be only 5 kg per item for carry on, but allowed 2). There were 2 of us, and only the one wheeled carry on between us.

The laptop bag (as well as camera bag, books, pjs, valuables, documents and everything else were all in the bag). Before heading through, and knowing screening was coming up, I took the laptop out of its own bag, and had it tucked in the front pocket of the wheely, sticking out, ready to put in the scanner (not safe or secure, but convenient for going through the queue).

When asked to weigh, I was anticipating having to pull all the individual bags out separtely to weigh, to prove we could get to 4 bags at less then 5kg each (which we probably could have, push come to shove, especially when the odd book in a pocket would weigh nothing ;)).

Suprisingly, the whole thing went on, weighed 14kg  (you can see why it was being wheeled), and the person doing the weighing (who could see the laptop), and had only asked what airline (not class), simply said, "Oh, that's OK, you get allowed extra with a laptop" - and on we went.

QF allows two pieces of carry on with one being a personal item such as a day pack, and they allow 7kg per piece. I have learnt to travel light now so I carry all of the heavier items such as chargers/cords/attachments in the day pack to even them out. Also, I carry the two bags separately through security using the handle on the side of the wheeled bag and in the three years I have had the bag I have never been asked to weigh them. Maybe is just good luck, but I remember my last trip to the USA 6 months ago when I weighed them on the kitchen scales at home because of this reason, and both bags only weighed 17kg. If I was challenged I would simply put some more clothes on from the bag.

If you are looking for a lot of Variety on for wheeled carry on luggage for different brands such as Samsonite, Delsey, Briggs Riley and even Eagle Creek, then I would suggest you to check out Bergman Luggage. Some of the new Attache bags are really good.
