I did a search, and there are a few topics on this, but they are a few years out of date. Two questions...

Has QF108 moved beyond its 10-late reputation? The QF rep I spoke to assured me that I would definitely make the connection to QF94.

Am I better off taking the shuttle between terminals, or going landside and walking? It'll be a Friday night in September, so whether this makes a difference or not...

Not sure what you mean by "beyond its 10-late reputation", but I flew QF108 and QF94 in August 2010 and despite QF108 being about 45 min. late, we made the connection no problem. I was surprised by the short connection time at LAX (60 min. if I remember correctly), but figured QF would not be selling the flights if they thought it was a problem and that they would look after me if things went awry.

They were holding QF 94 for us (my understanding is that as QF108 is the main feeder for QF 94 and the flights to SYD and BNE, they always hold these flights for QF108) and held it for quite a while for some stragglers that didn't turn up (may have been on an AA fllight).

When I got off QF 108 there were very clear instructions for the connecting flights - they directed us to the shuttle bus, which was only a few min. and no problem.

EDIT: Just checked the schedule and it appears the connection time is actually 90 min., but I was still surprised at the shortness.

From reading old threads, 108 often ran quite late, and I was wondering if this had improved. I know theyll hold QF94, but not if 108 is significantly late :)

I wasn't aware of this, but figured since Qantas was selling this as their main flight from JFK-MEL, the number of times QF108 doesn't make QF94 would have to be very small.

If you were on an AA flight JFK-LAX, it might be a different story! Having said that, they appeared to wait for an AA flight as well.

QF108 is often referred to as QF10 late. That being said it is normal to hold QF94 for QF10 late though I'm not sure where the cut off really is.

We were held for 90 minutes one night.

I see! I just assumed it would be ok! Glad I didn't know about its reputation, as I would have worried for nothing!

As I said above, I reckon the number of times QF 10 late doesn't make QF 94 would very small, i.e. not worth worrying about (unless you absolutely have be in MEL for some reason).

(unless you absolutely have be in MEL for some reason).

More a case of having a great seat picked out on the A380 that I really want to experience...plus after a full-on 5 weeks, I just dont want the hassle of being re-routed etc.

I've heard that 94 can be held up to 2 hours, but how true that is I dont know.... just like to be prepared for all possibilities :p

I understand your reasoning - QF 94 was my first A380 flight and I would have been annoyed if I had been re-routed (my flight was also after 5 full-on weeks), but at the end of the day, it's not the end of the world and very unlikely in my opinion.

And two hours would be a lot of leeway!

QF10Late operates less reliably when weather is bad. I was on it in mid-June and we were delayed 6 hours out of JFK (thunderstorms). They didn't hold QF94 for us, but bumped us to QF 108 which was held. The weather should be better by September.

Thats a bummer. At least they hold 108 so you arent completely stuffed. Fingers crossed September weather is lovely :)

Being from ADL, it makes little difference going via SYD or MEL, as I've got an onward flight either way.

No doubt what they will hold depends on numbers. You know that QF26 is held because that's the plane, so back via AKL should be the worst-case.

Interestingly, I slept better on QF108 in a 747 than I had on QF11 in a 380 - the noise of the 747 drowned out other Y passengers, whereas the 380 was TOO quiet in Y with lots of passenger noise (and a problem child with problem parents!). No doubt in premium classes the 380 is divine, but I was underwhelmed in Y.

Don't be too optimistic on that... in J/F, the part of the aircraft where ambience noise is the lowest, some pax do sleep quiet, er, soundly.

I came back via AKL last time so thats not too much of a drama...seemed to eliminate the jet lag too.

I felt the same way about the A380 last time, but I'm looking forward to going again. I think a combo of the passengers in front and behind, and the fact that it was my first long haul flight, made it unpleasant, but I know what to expect now, and didnt have any problems on the flight coming home.

Boy did I ever jinx myself! Was on the phone to QF at 2.30am (NY time) as QF107 is so delayed into JFK that I wont be making QF94. So Im now being routed via Sydney on QF108 then Melbourne. Bye-bye 80A on the A380 :( Hello coughpy aisle seat down the back of a 747.

Not the trip home I was hoping for after almost 5 weeks in the US, and the fact Im suffering a very nasty chest infection.
