Apart from the flight times (a few hours apart), is there any practical differences between these two flights?

Don’t know about you but I would prefer to get in on the earlier QF36 as I’d be connecting to a domestic flight. I thinks it’s a bit more friendlier time as you can some dinner in the SIN lounge and on the aircraft if still hungry and then have a sleep onboard and arrive hopefully refreshed. That would be my preference as opposed to hanging around the airport until midnight and then getting back mid morning

My preference is usually the later flight, as I'm a late sleeper and I find it very hard to get any meaningful sleep on a flight that departs prior to 9pm. With QF36, I may only get in 2 hours of sleep before the cabin is being prepared for breakfast (~4am AEST or the equivalent of 2am in Singapore).

Looking at the schedule though, QF36 may be a 787 vs an A330 for QF38? You may prefer QF36 for the lower cabin pressurisation and the slightly updated J seat. I also agree that if you want to connect, or if you had anywhere to go or do in Melbourne in that morning, the earlier flight makes more sense.

My preference is QF 8404 ;) Much better timing.

That aside, I take the contrary view and prefer QF38 to QF36. I say this as someone who has a bedtime of closer to midnight, and who is not a great sleeper on planes therefore if I take QF36 I simply can’t get to sleep until about 4-5 into the flight which only leaves about 1.5-2.5 hrs before being woken for landing (granted my normal time zone is Singapore).

But even back in the day when I lived in MEL and visited SIN at least once a month, I slept better on cradle seats in the midnight SQ departure then lie flat or angled lie flat seats on the early evening departure.
