I've got a flight on QF73/74 SYD-SFO-SYD booked late November, and noticed some seat map strangeness.

When I booked 5 days ago, F was available, and showed as F9 (and EF was showing 2 seats allocated).

When I looked today, F is F0, and is not available for sale on the days i'm flying (if you try and book it via QF). I checked the seat map and there does not appear to be any seating re-allocation as was common last year, and F is coming up as it was last week (with the allocated/blocked/empty seats still showing).

Has anyone seen this happen before? Seems strange that they'd change it to F0, stop selling yet still have the seating maps available (and show allocated seats). Anyone able to offer a suggestion of what might be going on here?

Aircraft sub for a 2 class aircraft would seem one possible reason.

Unlikely an aircraft sub if the seatmap is the same.

Not all passengers who book have a seat preallocated, although this is not as common in First Class.

They are still selling Y/Y+ and J with a 4 class 744 config showing on the seat map.

Wonder what the go is with it.

I tried to book F class on QF73 just over 6 months ago and was told by QF that they are not selling F seats to SFO, only LAX. Several weeks later I checked EF and saw a number of the seats in the F cabin were blocked, but QF again confirmed they were not selling F. That might explain F0.

There was a period last year where F wasn't sold on 73/74 depsite using a 4 class 744, perhaps they've done that again? So Plats will end up with F seats and J service?

As I mentioned in the OP, that's not the case. There is no cabin re-definition at work, and a few weeks ago, F9 was showing in EF (and indeed I could book/get a price on it via QF's website).

If I try and book MEL-SFO now in F, I am routed MEL-LAX-SFO.

Perhaps they're leading up to a possible cabin re-definition again. Certainly no complaints if they do and shuffle Y+ to J and some Y to Y+

I'll keep an eye out.

(interestingly also, on the return dummy booking in F, they're routing people on UA from SFO to LAX and then QF94 LAX-MEL; UA931 was the flight they listed, as well as the AA codeshare 3152).
