Am sure there will be a bit of media hysteria about a minor incident.

Qantas Airbus from Melbourne to Los Angeles diverted to Sydney due to technical fault
Flight QF93 departed Melbourne on Thursday morning and was heading north when the pilots observed a fault with an indicator light.

A flight map shows the plane circling off Sydney with reports that it dumped fuel at sea before coming in to land at Sydney Airport.

A Qantas spokesman said the plane was forced to divert to Sydney due to the faulty indicator light but "it is not an emergency situation".


The aircraft landed in Sydney just after 1pm and it will be checked by maintenance staff.

Channel 7 Sydney had a live broadcast of the approach and landing from their news chopper with a banner reading "emergency landing" overlaid on the pictures.
The landing looked text book. Taxi to the gate with F&R trailing for a while, then F&R left.
Looked more like a precautionary return than an emergency.

Indeed, while at the same time confirming the QF had stated it was not an emergency landing.

And I expect that it wasn't. But, it was probably a landing at quite a high weight, and brakes can get pretty hot, even in normal circumstances. So, having a fire vehicle tail you is just a precaution. A 3 engined landing (BTW, I don't know that it was), in a quad, is NOT inherently an emergency.

Such delays are almost always beneficial for those in F!. An extra few hours to languish in an oversized seat.... "No worries captain take all the time you need".

Unless you are in F because you are busy and have to be somewhere at a particular time. Then it could be incredibly irritating.

Some in F (note: I did not say 'everyone') could well be used to the 'high life' and hence the F lounge for them may be different, but inferior, to the Michelin-starred restaurant at which they were spotted last week.
