I will be making a number of domestic flights in the US in July and wanted to check something before making all the bookings.

I know that we only earn 50% of the miles flown in discount economy on AA, but on Alaska Airlines it is 100% of the miles flown. Looking at flight schedules on Orbitz most flights I am interested in can be booked with an AA or Alaska flight number, so will I still earn points if I book it as an Alaska flight, given that they aren't really a Qantas partner? Or does it have to be an AA flight number to earn points even if its on Alaska metal?

If it helps or matters to you, I can confirm that you earn points and SCs if you book the AA code on AS metal - IIRC, you only earn points if you book the AS code.

Be aware of the following from the QFF Airline Earning Table:
Code:
——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————
American GLMNSV Discount Economy 0.5 -

So O class travel does not earn with either carrier, N class travel does not earn on AS and Q class travel does not earn on AA.

Also if you have an AA flight number on your BP you can earn in with QFF in any of the qualifying classes. If an AS flight number you earn on any of the qualifying classes as long as it's QF or AS metal.

e.g. For travel in "L" class:
  • AA flight number on AS metal - earn 50% on miles, disc WHY SC's.
  • AS flight number on AS metal - earn 100% on miles.
  • AS flight number on AA metal - nothing
  • AS flight number on QF metal - earn 100% on miles.
Now, there have been anecdotes that travel with AS flight numbers on AA metal has earned QFF points even though the T&C do not indicate as such. If you do this, don't expect it to actually happen.

I'd posit that it's no anecdote -- per the QF T&C's, there is no exclusion stated below where it says Status Credits are earned on all eligible Booking Classes - compare with the entries for CX/AY/IB et. al., which specifically exclude point and SC earn on codeshare flights involving non-OW metal.

Additionally, the term Eligible Flight is defined in 9.3.1 - Points for air travel may be earned only for paid travel ... on regular scheduled flights where a Qantas flight number (or the flight number of any oneworld Alliance Airline or Airline Partner not excluded under clause 9.4) is entered on the itinerary. Codeshares are not excluded in 9.4, save where explicitly excluded in the Airline Earning Table - and no such exclusions are made for AA.

Thus, an AA flight number on AS metal (on the proviso that the flight isn't booked in to O or Q) should credit points and SCs. From my own experience - they credit quite nicely (and at a great $$ per SC ratio as well! :D )

Actually I mucked up reversing the carrier codes - I have edited my post.

What I meant to post was:

Any travel with AA flight numbers on any carrier in an eligible booking class should earn points and SC's with QFF.

In fact, all metal except QF metal. (I assume that an AS codeshare on AS metal won't actually be a codeshare)

Points are not earned on Codeshare Flights operated by an airline other than Qantas
i.e. an AS codeshare on QF metal will earn.

Is there such a beast?

Thanks notzac, serfty and medhead for your replies :)
When flying on AS I will book with the AS flight number, as I'm just a humble bronze QFF member with no chance of making silver this year so not too fussed about getting SCs.

More than welcome :)

This reinforces it all.

It's the AA flight number that does the trick; as per the T&Cs, you should earn Points and SC's for any travel in an eligible booking class with an AA flight number.

Thank Goodness for that!
I am just about to book a KUPP for June and just realised it was partly on AS metal, but it's a code share with AA, therefore I still earn SCs when booking with AA. Am I correct?
Booking into F - flying one leg with AA, one leg with AA.

I did the SFO/SEA flight a couple of weeks ago (under the AA flight number, booked on the aa australian site) and it posted correctly..

13 APR 09 AA 6861 DISCOUNT ECONOMY 09APR09 SAN FRANCISCO/SEATTLE 340 - 170 510 15

As long as you're booking the AA code, you're fine. Enjoy your flight - AS are definitely one of the better US domestic airlines. :)

Well I did notice the Y seats are very narrow on AS..

maybe I was just in a bad row..
