38,400 is 80% of 48,000 - the normal one-way award cost MEL-LAX in economy.
Yeah:
Melbourne - Los Angeles

20% off Award flights between Melbourne and Los Angeles:

•just 38,400 points* (+ between A$100 and $158^)
•based on one-way, Economy Award flights
•valid in either direction on QF25 and QF26 only
...
Valid for bookings 15 November to 12 December 2005, and for travel 1 February to 31 March 2006.

It is important to note that it is valid for QF25/26 LAX-MEL only.

I noticed that yesterday; two weeks ago I used 48,000 & US$48 on a one way LAX-xSYD-MEL for March.

I considered changing ... a seat is available and even with the 5000 pt. reticketing fee, still leaves me 4600 points better off.

But then I realised I would probably need to depart from TBIT, so that was the end of that!

So loss of value from TBIT departure > 4600 points?! Seems a bit steep to me.

Yep, considering I would be arriving at TBIT ~3pm from LHR with ~8pm boarding from TBIT for QF26.

For a start, there are (apparently) no QP shower facilities in TBIT available for my use.

It would have been a given if the difference was 9,600 points, but 4,600 is not enough.
