I'm just looking for a little clarification now that I'm an SC addict - yes I admit it.

Normally we fly QF or J* and collect our SCs (except now with J* *C I'm not happy with the changes).

Questions (keep in mind I want to earn SCs but don't really care about points as much):

If I book a OW airline, to ensure SC earn (provided correct fare is booked), can I book directly with the (non QF) OW airline or must I book a code-share flight with a QF flight number ?

I also like to be be able to seat select. So, if the answer to the above ies YES I can book with a OW airline vs with QF, then to seat select do I usually need to pre-join that airlines program ?

Sorry if these are simple questions but I'm not 100% clear on the rule base to ensure SCs are credit.

I'm SG with QF.

You can book direct with the partner airline, as long as your QF membership number is recorded in the booking. You don't need to be on a code-share flight. See the Airline Earning Table for a full list of partner airlines and eligible booking classes: http://www.qantas.com.au/fflyer/dyn/program/terms#airlineearn

This comes down to the individual airline's policies. Some may allow seat selection based on OW level (e.g. BA), others may allow it for everyone, some may allow it only for their own members, and some may not allow it at all. You'll need to check the airline's own website to know for sure.

Just to add further information, check the QF Airline earning page Frequent Flyer - About the Program - Terms & Conditions if you want to get into the intricacies of SC chasing.
Just be careful booking codeshares on OW members. One example is Cathay. Book CX 1726 (codeshare KUL-HKG, operated by MH*) and you do not get points of SC's. Book CX724 and you will get points and SC's provided it is in the right booking class
* subject to change with MH ofcourse!

And if you book an AY code on a BA flight from SYD to BKK you won't get your extra status miles :D The joys of the freq flyer world

Many thanks all. I think I have a better handle on it now.

One last one if anyone sees this ... Exit Rows on QF flights.

When I selecting my seats for domestic, it shows I can select exit rows (the red seats).
So I really need to pay for these ? As it seems within a day or so of the flight, the exist rows seem all allocated i.e are people really shelling out cash for short flight exit rows e.g SYD > BNE ?

Qantas Seat Selection
* There is a limited selection of Exit Row Seats available on domestic flights at no charge.

In practice, only status members can get them due to having advance ability to select certain seats.

Forgot to mention, I'm QF Gold so I can see the exit rows (red) anytime it seems.
But do I really need to pay for them or are they 'free' to select ?

I've ready the conditons and it does seem a fee is payable. But in practise, is that reality?

International there is a charge but domestic they are free.
