Needing 1200 status credits to retain QFF Platinum every year really keeps one on the QFF 'treadmill'. I notice that fares on some other OW airlines are MUCH lower than QF. Does one receive the same number of QFF status credits for similar other OW airline flight/class combinations that one would receive for flying on a QF coded flight? (Hope this makes sense)
Essentially, what I am trying to figure out is the cheapest way to retain Platinum. Typical flights are SYD-LHR-SYD in F or BNE-LAX-BNE in J...
All comments very gratefully received. I imagine this has been canvassed previously...

Hi FirstClass

SCs - yes, provided booked in appropriate fare class (not really an issue for J/D or F/A as they'll credit fully on all OW airlines)

Points - AA/BA/QF will give you cabin bonus and status bonus, other OW only give cabin bonus only (again, subject to appropriate fare class).

Of course you can just stop worrying and step off the treadmill

If it is a flight eligable for SCs then the earning rates will be the same regardless of carrier. F on CX is no different than F on QF for earning

I would also take a shocking consideration. Do look at how much other carriers are since ( ime ) airlines such as QF can have significantly higher fares than some (ime better) airlines ( e.g. QF was $3000 more expensive on a F return ex UK to SYD than EK last year). But if within OW, doesnt matter which carrier

If doing UK regularly, I would suggest looking at buying UK-OZ r/ts since the F r/ts are generally a lot cheaper than OZ-UK ones

e.g. in Feb, EY has F return UK-SYD for GBP4637 ($8293) and EK for GBP5186 ($9275) whilst QF is charging GBP7630 ($13647)

Ex Australia, Qantas is charging $18263 for a 1st class return so an easy $4600 saving there but personally I would take the EK flight ex UK and save $8000.. ( comparatively EK is $14831 ex AU )

Thank you both for the kind answers!
Yes, 'off the mill' is a possibility, I guess!
With Lifetime Gold one can still use the lounge when flying QF domestically etc, so...
Maybe it is time to look outside OneWorld...

If LT Gold, then covered nicely for domestic trips

If international trips are in premium cabins anyway, then lounge access is assured anyway. On the routes to London, you can knock your price for F down to half price by booking ex UK and taking EK and enjoy the delights of the EK F service on the A380. 1 F trip will get silver status with no difficulty and get 45,000 of the 50,000 points needed for Gold. Do a 2nd trip within 13 months and well past gold

Is Platinum status worth $8000+ ?

BNE-LAX in J can be got down to a price of around $6330 by going with V Australia vs the $15,000 for Qantas. To do it at a reasonable price on a OW carrier , could do Jetstar r/t to HNL in Starclass for around $2800 plus $2600 for AA HNL-LAX r/t in 1st ( total $5400 ) though V Australia does look to have a nicer product that JQ * class and AA 1st class on 757s

While SC earning is the same across OneWorld airlines, QFF points earning can vary due to the "Status Bonus" which is only paid for QF, BA and AA flight numbers (and eligible Jetstar flights).

I recently had some flights on AA which were in "A" class due to using AA miles to upgrade.

The QF computer still credited these as Economy even though the whole thing had been rebooked, ticket reissued etc in AA "A". It seems that the QF computer is just too smart!

When one reads the QF Freq flyer rules it does say bookings on AA in "A" first count as first.

Anyhow, I didn't take the issue up with QF as don't need the SCs for anything.

So it seems that First "A" is not alwyas First "A"!

That is an upgrade though ; upgrades only count as the underlying fare basis and not the upgraded class and is covered in the T&Cs

Don't forget the required 4 QF segments for status which could be an issue if you're earning your SC's from a small number of F flights.

relatively easy to do a short domestic leg in discount economy though

Of course, the treadmill can be less arduous - there are many posts/threads on this and other fora in value for $ SC's.

e.g. ex TPE to BKK vv on CX in J earns 200 SC's for ~AUD700.

LAX/SFO-SFO/LAX-LAX/SFO earns 120 SC's for ~AUD370.

Of course the interesting part is getting to TPE/LAX/SFO from Oz in the first place.

More on fares to Oz ex other countries, QF are selling r/t fare LAX-MEL/SYD for ~$1000 USD - try getting $1120 fare ex Oz in the same periods.

Or even ex TPE to MNL vv on CX in J earns 200 SC's for ~AUD450.

I have noticed that CX has noticeably increased the airfares on some of the routes. I hope this is not due to people abusing these status runs....
