Considering doing the above, just wondering if it's instant transfer confirmation of if you have to submit documents / proof of relationship etc?

Haven't done it myself, but have read a number of times here that the transfer is pretty much instantaneous.

Yes, it is instantaneous. Generally proof of relationship is not required, but I expect Qantas reserve the right to close accounts and forfeit points if the accounts are not operated within the published and agreed terms and conditions.

I know a friend who had real troubles using UA miles for his parents.
Had to go to the airport (no office in AUS) to sales desk and provide proof of relationship for transfer.
Glad QF doesn't seem to be such a hassle
I've used someone else's SQ miles for redemption - easy as pie.
