Hi, new to AFF so be gentle.

Have purchased economy seats on QF7 to DFW flying April. Have requested upgrade to PE through QFF and received following reply.

An upgrade to Premium Economy is requested. Status of upgrade will be shown 5 hours before departure.

Does this sound promising or shouldn't we get our hopes up?

Flying on Easter Sunday so I guess its Australian school holidays. Will this make likelihood of upgrade even less likely?

Possible more likely as economy would be more likely to be oversold, hence more upgrades may be needed.

Welcome to AFF. :D

I wouldn't get my hopes up. Heres what ExpertFlyer thinks about that flight on the 8th/4:

J9 C9 D9 I2 W9 R9 T1 Z1 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 G0 X1 E0

Looks like lots of economy class availability.... actually, lots of availability overall. Not sure about T class, but Z is PE Awards/upgrades and the stocks are low.

Hi

Have just started using ExpertFlyer - where do I find the class availabilty?
Also what do you mostly use ExpertFlyer for?

There is a demo available, check that out. It will be trial and error.

If you put your QFF number in it will quite accurately give you seating availability. That and e amounts of seats by class for sale to the airlines maximum visibility, in QF it will show a maximum of 9.

Its quite handy. You can determine the 'seat shadow' if they have blocked off the seat next to you. That's handy.

I feel your pain. Only started paying attention to the details in the last year and a bit myself. Didn't understand anything about the airline "machine". After a couple of trial runs on EF, I realised that I lacked enough knowledge to use the tool really at all. However, took a punt and got a year subscription figuring it would help me to learn whats what.

So, probably 8-9 months has passed and I've got a much greater understanding of certain bits of how fares are sold and am starting to get an idea of the value of being able to see bucket availability via EF. Particularly when hunting awards or combinations of points and pay that book into award buckets, for planning purposes its really quite useful to see availability before you go and try to book. This is also where EF's alert facility can pay off.

EF, in conjunction with a deeper understanding of matrix.itasoftware's web tool and how to tweak results with its dB language can get you some excellent first step planning ideas

If looking for Qantas points Premium-Economy upgrade awards, look for T (or even better, Z) class availability [>0]. This is the 'deep discount' Qantas PE fare bucket.

You can also look for the most expensive category of the cabin you are booked in as being sold out i.e. Y0 for PE for increased op-up chances ... and availability in the discount premium award buckets (P, U, & Z inventories) can also be promising.

Given those loading you have a fair chance, even as a NB - do, however, plan on travelling in the cabin booked.
