Current promotion on the QF web site, promoting Hong Kong from $1311 in Y

Travel is via SIN and then either JQ or CX from SIN-HKG.

Meanwhile, CX Chinese New Years fares, especially PE fare from PER-HKG, are fantastic.

Direct fly with a very good PE product and cheaper than the Y special on QF.

Its not just Perth. I am looking at CNS to HKG.

Would you fly Qantas CNS-BNE-HKG (QF799 & QF97) and pay QF $1100 rtn for Y class or $3614 rtn for J class (+20% more $$ via SYD and get A380) = 15 to 17hrs in a B738 then A330 and the lovely transit DOM to INT in either BNE or SYD

vs Cathay Pacific CNS-HKG (CX146 & CX103) and pay CX $1022 rtn for Y class or $1232 rtn for Premium Economy or $5860 for J class (direct flights) = 7hrs direct flights A330 all the way

Just shows that CX don't seem to have a problem filling their J class cabins! But their PE fares look alright.

At those prices I think QF marketing is attempting to try to match the CX CNY sale but is really only making themselves look more foolish......

This is a very good example of the incompetence that has corrupted Qantas.

Do they seriously not pay any attention to their competitors or do they think we are complete idiots.

And how many outside of the AFFer group would think to compare/look???

At least I suspect QF is cheaper out of HKG than CX. Pity they don't fly to as many places in Australia.

Happy wandering

I agree it's a bit silly but probably worth noting that CX PE is more "economy" than "premium" right?

I.e nowhere near QF's PE

Depends on whether you value space , meals or service and it what order.

I'd rather fly CX PE LAX-HKG than QF Y LAX-SYD simply because of the extra space.
I have done both. And don't need "flat" to sleep.

They have a captive audience.

Just have a look at the business class loads to/from TSV, ASP, HBA.

And they can't be doing too badly with loads to SIN/BKK as people on AFF are booking multiple weekends away regularly.

I think we are in agreement there JohnK

Captive audience of TSV, ASP & HBA not enough to save the entire QF groups problems. Real international and a domestic competitor, disruptive internet effect and commodification of airfare comparison web sites. We would agree that lfull loads does not equal profit if the yield isn't there. The reason why so many AFFers taking weekends in SIN anx BKK is due to yields being trashed, fares low, high AUD, some .BR flights without fuel fines, and people harvesting a bazillion ATO QFF points and burning them off on overseas flights before the entire thing collapses under its inefficiency, mismanagement and spin.

CX PE has the same width seat and same legroom as QF PE. Dedicated cabin, and one business class meal per flight.

it's close enough to QF PE.

What about CX PE pitch?

Every time I loook to book CX PE fares HKG-MEL, QF always comes out cheaper by a substantial margin.

I think you have just highlighted some of the reasons Qantas is failing.

Way too many gimmicks for little payback if any.
