Have just boarded QF2 (in Y šŸ˜ž) and had a spot of bother
Went to London to help mum sort some things out after the sad death of my brother
Also MIL asked me to bring back one of the bags she left behind in London and the usual requests for Sainsburys gravy granules and Oxo from the brood.
All in all ended up with 61kg over 3 bags at checkin. A bit shocked to discover that the excess 11kg over my (status-matched) QR OWE 50kg allowance would cost over $900
The F check-in staff were lovely (and quiet) and let me repack there and then (and let through 3kg with a sympathetic nod-and-a-wink)
However when I reached the LHR QF lounge and asked them to credit to QF, it didn't seem to be possible without repricing the baggage to a 30kg limit.
The (inexperienced) agent suggested I'd be able to get the number changed at final destination (SYD) but I didn't believe that.
More senior people didn't seem to be able to fix either.
It's not a biggie but I thought I could mix-and-match OW benefits and FFP crediting. Am I right or wrong?

According to here (OW Emerald privileges), flying other than on your status airline:

As an Emerald frequent flyer, the following special checked baggage privileges will apply when you fly on oneworld airlines:

*On itineraries using the baggage allowance ā€œweightā€ system - 20 kgs in addition to the ticketed-cabin allowance.

So, without Qantas status, allowance in Y is 30kg (42kg if you are Qantas Club or Silver, but not sure if that is relevant to "ticketed cabin"?) , so I think your total, using Qantas FF number and taking OWE into account should have been 50kg.

Unfortunately you have to credit to your status airline to receive the benefits. If you credit to QF but hold no status on QF, to them you are not OWE.

People have, and do, double dip by strategically changing the number - but it seems like QF systems are wise to this.

That should be a Qantas rule and only apply with Qantas' non oneworld partners.

  • On itineraries using the ā€œpiece systemā€ - one additional bag for free in addition to your ticketed baggage allowance.
Note: This benefit is not available on British Airways' 'Hand Baggage Only/Basic' fares.
There are no caveats regarding crediting to status airline. Of course some poorly devised computerised systems may have issues with this.

Whether or not that's spelt out, in practice it's the case - the computer has to know if you are OWE and it does that by the FF number against the booking.

Oneworld airlines are still competitors, and sometimes they make you pick a lane.

Maybe they do, but not according to OneWorld rules, quoted above.

Where in the oneworld rules does it permit multiple oneworld memberships?

You have a different OW status with each airline you are a member of, and you pick which one you use. There is no universal oneworld membership card, it's based on the individual programs. The system isn't set up for pax to mix and match memberships. People might do it through various loopholes, but the very point of an alliance is to use one membership across the entire alliance.

Correct - when you remove the status FF number, the system will throw up a $ icon which means you've exceeded your baggage allowance and therefore are required to pay for that excess. I believe it is also setup to deny you boarding if there's excess due...

Well Amadeus actually is, but it is rarely used. FQTS for status and FQTV for accrual are some examples. Qantas have disabled it.
But let's not open that can o' worms ...

I was referring to "the system" in a general sense (ie, including airline policies) and not a specific computer system - especially considering not all airlines use Amadeus.
