Flying HNL-SYD on QF284, which is JQ metal. Economy fare. (This is leisure travel, my dime.) No status on QF (in fact have never flown them or been to Australia) or any partner. I am not transferring from another flight. (I'm flying UA JFK-SFO-HNL, staying 3 days, then flying to SYD. However, my entire itinerary, per my travel agent, including the outbound UA and my return -- which is QF SYD-LAX, AA as a QF codeshare SFO-JFK -- is booked through QF.

Question is re luggage. I've been told by QF customer service that my checked luggage limit on the JQ leg is QF's and not JQ's (and that I get some other minimal goodies to boot). Should I believe QF onthis? I've read some bad things about JQ and am concerned about an issue arising at HNL.

You booked on a QF ticket so therefore you should get the QF entitlements. I would take a copy of the luggage limits and meal entitlements as published so that you can push your points if necessary. This does happen often enough that it SHOULD not be an issue.

Agree with advice as provided.

What is the difference in bag allowances? I thought QF used the piece system to the states, whereas are JQ using the weight system?

Cheeky Monkeys......

I find the websites of both more than a bit confusing, but here's what I think I read:

On QF, 23 kg/50 lbs. (*Not* clear if it's one bag or two: It says "North America" gets two bags, *other* gets one -- but is Hawaii deemed North America as it is part of the USA or other as it's not in North America physically? Either way, I'm only taking one checked bag.)

On JS, depends on fare booked... Jet Saver Light gets no bag, and a huge cost to check at airport ($160). JetSaver and Jet Flex get 1 bag/20 kg. So my nightmare scenario is that they deem my QF fare a Jet Saver Light fare.

And while I will be printing the QF webpage on baggage and bringing it, it is by no means clear that it applies to codeshares -- and in the US with domestic flights, in a similar situation, it would be the metal carrier's rules that apply. [General US domestic rule in my experience: If the codeshare is a single flight, the rules of the airline operating the flight governs. So, back when CO and DL codeshared, if I was ticketed by CO on a flight ALB-ATL, but flying on DL metal, DL rules applied. If it's a connection, the first flight's checked baggage rules govern. So if you were flying ORD-LGA-CLT, booked on US, but with the first flight being on UA metal, UA's checked baggage rules govern. This makes sense as the people checking you in are following their own airline's rules, which one assumes they'd know better than someone else's.]

Yes, Hawaii is part of North America for baggage purposes. In fact, it's generally part of North America for all other purposes as well :)

It's unfortunate that JQ have changed their policy for luggage there - I went with them to HNL twice in the past in Starclass and was entitled to 2x 32kg, but shortly after they changed it to match their other destinations. If you're on a QF ticket though it's all good.

Bear in mind the outlet shopping is great (Waikele premium outlets) so even if you go with one bag, you might come back with two! :D

LOL... well, geographically, I think of it as not being part of the NA continent, I guess, all out there in that big ocean.

As for the outlet shopping, my wife's not going, so I'm safe. I do think I'll be buying local books (and shipping them home by media mail), though. I do that just about everywhere I go. :)

Baggage entitlements for Jetstar flights

Question
What is the baggage allowance if my trip includes a Jetstar flight?

Answer Jetstar has its own Checked Baggage Allowances for its customers. However, for Qantas-marketed flights, that is, flights with a Qantas flight number, Qantas baggage allowances apply.

All Frequent Flyer and Qantas Club member allowances apply only to travel on Qantas operated jet flights with a QF flight number on your ticket.
