Have been trying to get as good flights as possible for my wife's and my trip to god-daughter's wedding in England in December

Had found Y+ through flights SYD-MEL-HKG-CDG on the QF site and bought these

Today I found availability for Y+ MEL-HKG and J HKG-MXP. Not wanting to lose them I booked both separately

I did need to transfer some Amex MR points-I was pleased to see this was almost instant

I checked the HKG transit rules and need to be on a single ticket. I called the Asia Miles number asking them to link. Agent initially said couldn't be done but after some coaxing agreed to do so.

On reflection the wait time for service was short and I would have been better calling and doing it all over the phone

Currently waiting for the confirmation. Looks like linking will save me some miles (and almost half the QF redemption miles).

Once the Asia Miles redemption confirmed I will cancel the QFF one

There was more redemption inventory than I was expecting.

Transit rules do limit flexibility (I had to turn down an all J redemption on JL as it had a banned overnight transit)

Not sure how they did this... if it's two separate bookings they can't combine them. Linking them is a different issue - two separate tickets can be 'linked' with a note, but it doesn't combine them. Behind the scenes they may have in fact cancelled one ticket, held the seats, and added them to the other?

I think that is what they are doing, I still haven't heard yet-fingers crossed they don't stuff it up

All sorted now. Taxes almost identical (allowing that I don't now have a SYD-MEL leg) but many fewer points than the QFF redemption 286400 (all Y+ for 2) v 147800 (Y+/J)

Have realised that my return is in a "vaccine-travel-lane" SQ flight and transiting HKG outbound means I will need to change it-ho hum

Gday

Different redemption query: I'm looking to go from ITM-xHND-SYD using Asiamiles. Both legs will be JL metal. On QFF it comes up with loads of availability but Asiamiles has nothing from Osaka to HND on JL(but plenty of HND-SYD on JL). Thought it was because of the 90 day Japanese domestic flight advance booking restriction but couldn't find anything closer in either. Anyone got any pointers as to what im doing wrong?
Thanks,
Pele.
