Just joined this community and have some basic questions. With about 915,000 points in the bank, how do spend them to get best value? Upgrades for non-business travel, seats for leisure travel, QFF shop?? (There's a suitcase I quite like the look of). Is there a rule of thumb to calculate what a point is worth in cents? Cheers.

Welcome to AFF Cairnsexpat. The value of points is really what value you place on them. Generally speaking, I find upgrades tend to be a v. good use of points.

However, to others; spending 224,000 points on a PER-LHR return trip in Business Class is good value.

YMMV.

Also consider a RWT Onewold Business Class Award...at 28o,000 per person.

Or in econmy for 140,000 each.

Welcome to AFF Cairnsexpat!

I've only ever redeemed for straight business awards, or upgrades to business. For me, the good deals you can usually get for economy travel mean I don't use points for that. But that's just what suits me, your opinion/requirements may vary.

I've never seriously looked at the QF shop but from what I've read here it seems people have had a lot of trouble even getting goods delivered!

I don't think there is a correct answer to what a point is worth...plenty of ways to value them, depends on the individual.

Hey Champ,

Based on the amount of points you have earned I would say you are not the type of person who flies economy.

I would recommend just as "lovetravellingoz" has to book Round the World Business Class on One World. Its 280 000 points per person plus you pay the taxes which are usually $1000. You can also book a flight for another person using your points if you wish.

I would highly recommend booking at least 300 days in advance so you can get the flights you want. Always call to book, i book RTW business on points often and i find the online system on the qantas website doesnt allways show all the optoins available to you. If you get a good consutant on the phone you are laughing.

I have cards with Hyatt, SPG, Hilton, Avis, Hertz erc and I find the best value for money is always to book business class RTW.....return flights are good also but not as good value for money.

Unless your a Gold or Platinum Frequent Flyer forget upgrades....they are too hard to get unless you fly on a very empty flight.

Thats my 2 cents...

Thanks for your replies. I guess I had in mind a value such as 2c per point or some such. I read in another post somewhere that "20,000 pts would be worth $400 - $800 in a good year" or WTTE. I can see it would depend to a large extent on what the cash value of seat etc was at the time.

Don't use your Qantas miles for anything but flights.

May be we have only seen the bad size of the Qantas Shop so I wouldn't even try that. Another company not Qantas runs the Qantas shop.

RTW in J for 280,000 is a good deal.

Using the points for business class inside Australia is not to bad; example 18,000 points BNE-PER or 36,000 BNE-PER the business class option is a better use of points, as the ticket cost for business is about 4 times as much.

If you are Qantas Gold or Plat then your chances of getting an upgrade for flights is more likely.
