Hi All

Like many I'm having to cancel an upcoming Qantas flight. The refund should go back onto a cc, problem was it was a churner which is closed. Are people contacting Qantas before cancelling or just cancelling and then going through the process.

Cheers

Banks keep track of expired and closed credit accounts for years. If money arrives in a closed account, the bank will work out who owns it and either transfer the money into another account that account holder has with that bank, or sends out a check to the last known address.

in fact standard protocol is credit card account is left open for at least 6 months after the customer closes it, so it can receive any lost transactions (or refunds).
Authorisations of course will be denied.

if a credit arrives you will receive a a normal monthly statement in the mail showing the transaction, you wlll need to contact the bank to arrange for it to be withdrawn

FWIW, one of my credit cards was stolen a few months ago and a new card issued (same bank, just different card number etc). I called the bank (Citibank) and they informed me the money will still be deposited onto my account without me needing to do anything.

The process when I went through this with QF in about 2015 was for me to send QF a stat dec to confirm the credit card was closed. QF then refunded to a different account but I can't remember which one. It took about 3 weeks I think. My bank told me at the time that if QF tried to pay money to a closed credit card it would be rejected as a transaction.

All banks will accept refunds into a closed CC account for at least 12 months. Once the refund hits the account, you need to call the bank and get them to transfer the funds to you.

Similar thing with my Amex , I changed it from the Ultimate down to the Explorer so I didnt have to pay the $450 annual fee. During the change over I rented a car from Thrifty and and the weekend got the 'deposit' refunded. Now Im in the situation where Amex say there is no change to my card and any returned deposit would just go directly to the new card and Thrifty saying the return was denied by Amex. Amex claim has been made and they are looking into it but say it can take between 6 to 8 weeks ! I dont have to do anything about the $200 and dont get charged for it but 2 months to work it out does seem a little excessive.
