(Ive already tried searching)

I assume this is either completely impossible or so common people do it all the time.

I know that when I have purchased something on CC and then returned it to a retailer they sometimes ask 'which card would you like that refunded to?' and you can choose the CC you paid for it with, or just a VISA debit so it goes straight back into your bank account, some also refund in cash.

I assume where I purchase something on CC and its refunded on that same CC I dont receive any FF points. What about a retailer where Im able to get a cash refund or refunds back onto a visa debit? I know Id have to be very, very careful that what I bought was refundable and not 'store credit' but places like Kmart and Myer immediately spring to mind - if I handed the stressed out worker on the refund desk a visa debit for the refund rather than the visa credit I used to buy it with I doubt they would notice the difference (or care). I had a look on both these stores 'refund policies' and they say 'refunds are given using the original payment method'. Would that mean visa to visa (visa credit to via debit?)?

Impossible or do people do this?

I know BigW will only refund to the original card. Probably worth trying though!

I always wonder what happens to people whose credit cards have been lost or stolen in between a purchase and a refund...

Almost all stores will have a policy that refunds are made in the original payment type and, where applicable, onto the same card.
I also know of quite a few retailers that enforce this rule with staff training rather than POS system restrictions.

Don't bother asking for an EFTPOS/Credit Card purchase to be refunded as cash, but you can usually get away with refunds to different cards. Just take a look at the receipt. If the EFTPOS receipt is a separate piece of paper it probably means the systems don't talk to each other so thats a good sign.
Otherwise, if it is an integrated system, take a look at what appears on the receipt. Sometimes it just says EFT rather than the card type or number.

And just like so many other things, if you fail just try again with a different staff member.

I may be wrong but law dictates the refund must be made in the same card,
whether its the same type of card or same actual card, I am no lawyer, nor do I want to be

that being said, ive been doing a lot of shopping at bunnings, and they say you must put it back on the same card, however, they dont check most of hte time, so the few small refunds ive done, iv purchased on amex and refunded on MC,

so I profited like 0.8points per $, but I only refunded about $100 in total out of $10k spend,

a couple of years ago I made a $30k purchase, paid a $8k deposit, they then charged me for the full balance,

and they sent me a cheque for $8k a few weeks later so 8000 points for free, but I suspect they werent supposed to do that,

I guess you could profit from refunds, however, unless , you are doing it for big purchases, is it really worth it????

the only best way to profit from points, is if you have overseas uni friends, since most of them pay by cash, get them to give you the cash and you use your credit card!

some of the fees are like $20k pa!

yea, i know what you mean. esp medical students, 40k+ pa. duno what it is now, prob closer to 50k.

i looked outside the retail sphere.

for instance (hypothetically of course) someone accidentally overpaid on CC my utility bill by $4,000.

Origin refunded the overpayment via direct deposit to our bank account. The charge and points remained on the card.

I bought stuff on CC from woollies (EDR promo) while the CC was used for refund. The EDR card was not required , so kept the 200 promo points. :-)

I picked a retail store (Target) and tried this last week. Their eftpos terminal and POS are integrated on the one receipt which has my card type and number. I was asked for the exact card (by card number) that I paid for the item with. Upon telling her I didn't have that card on me I was told without the exact card it was paid for on all I could be given was a credit voucher.

When I miraculously found the CC I used to pay for it she very carefully checked the card number against the receipt and allowed me to refund onto that card.

I would suggest the big department stores that only give you one receipt will not allow you to refund onto a different card.
