I'm heading to Hong Kong for work for a week, and have the choice between two hotels - Regal Hotel Hong Kong (Causeway Bay) or Crowne Plaza Causeway Bay.

The Regal is nearly half the price of the Crowne Plaza, and is rated 5 star vs Crowne Plaza's 4 stars.

Has anyone stayed at the Regal, and could you give me any feedback? At this stage, I'm erring towards the Regal based on price alone but would appreciate any guidance.

Crowne Plaza is newer and quite nice (havent stayed at the Regal).

I ended up going ahead and booking the Regal. The rate was too good to refuse, and I should still earn 1000 QFF points too.

I guess a trip report is in order.

I've been there. It's in a very good location. But maybe a bit old fashioned and not quite as polished as other HK hotels? Don't set your expectations sky high and you'll probably be very pleased! I'd make the same decision as you I think.

I found Regal to be a little tired. It would have been a very nice hotel in the 80s and 90s. The CP is new and modern, but a longer walk from MTR station but probably a little closer to Times Square. For several trips to HK last year I was working right next door to the Regal and still chose to stay at other hotels. Many of our other traveling staff stayed at the Regal due to it price and convenience. The Regal was handy for getting a taxi when it was raining ;)

I'm back from my week-long stay in the Regal.

Here's a trip report...

Upon arrival in a cab, bags were collected, and we were ushered through the marble lobby to take a lift to Level 31 (the Club Floor) for check in. I was surprised by this, as my rate was only HKD$800/night + 10% service charge. At check in, I was informed my room was on level 20. We were then ushered to the room. I was told that I was to check in on level 31 as I was a valuable customer.

The room itself was very reasonable - a king sized bed, a huge corner bath, and a separate shower. There was a new 40 or 42" LCD TV mounted on the wall. Input sockets were not accessible, and you could only watch it from the bed. The view from the room was between two other buildings, out over Victoria Park CWB, with Victoria Harbour in the distance - very nice. The room was much larger than the rooms at the Excelsior. After seven nights, the staff there started to get to know us and were very attentive to us. The location was great for MrsDeKa as the MTR station is only a few hundred metres away.

I would return, particularly given the price. As NM said, it would have been a very nice hotel in the 80s and 90s but some of the fixtures just look quite dated now, when you compare it to a brand new modern hotel like Crowne Plaza Hong Kong at Causeway Bay.
