Rental Car Advice - Convertable vs SUV

Hiya,

Have been a long time reader, but havnt travelled much and now a first time poster


Going on a US trip in a few months time and am doing a road trip component for about 10 days.

There will be 2 of us and weighing up between a 2 door sporty convertable or more roomy SUV.

Will be travelling from Vegas across to Georgia, about a 2 week duration (will be at the end of summer) Was orginally thinking of the convertable, but a mate was saying - 10 days of getting sunburnt, eating bugs, and not much space will have you with the top up and wishing you had gone for the spacey SUV.

Have never driven a convertable or really done a roadtrip, so was hoping for some advice from more seasoned travellers - does he have a point ? or is it really just personal taste etc.

Welcome to AFF.
Now do you mean the end of the US summer which is officially in about 6 weeks or the end of our summer when it will be spring there-and maybe a little cold for a convertible(you did say a few months).
However it really does come down to choice.Convertibles usually have little boot space so if you are going to be travelling with a bit of gear not a great choice.The only time i hired a SUV was in upstate NY over Christmas when we thought it may snow-and it sure did.
Personally we go for an intermediate or standard car because of adequate boot space and better fuel consumption than the SUVs.

Last time I checked (Hertz's) SUVs and people movers had tinted glass where as most other makes (standard etc) did not. This may make it easier to decide.

I agree with drron, I like a roof over my head. Usually rent thru Alamo, or Avis, booking a SVU (Jeep Commander where available) which deals with the weather variables that can occur in the U.S. Last April, bush fires in Waco, floods around Dallas, twisters in Oklahoma, snow and ice on Inter 40 between Tocumcari, and Albuquerque, so for me the SUV was worth renting.

If you do rent, there is a great road atlas put out by Rand McNally, available at Target etc., for around $5.00

My opinion - SUV.

I'm a two car family - a convertable and normal sedan. The convertable is really only good for day trips or an overnighter if I was honest and even with the roof up it's not so comfortable in wet wether.

Had a mid-size SUV on my last visit Sate side, a Buick, which wasn't too bad at all.
