Hey guys, I am Velocity gold and I am looking for J on MEL->LAX.
Just wondering if booking a freedom fare, going on the points upgrade waitlist, and then refunding or moving the flight if the waitlist is unsuccessful?
Then just rinse and repeat, until I secure a successful J upgrade?

Is there something I'm missing which would mean this wouldn't work. Obviously the flights would be last minute, which I am fine with.

Even though there is no fee to change you would have to pay any fare didference.

It looks like Freedom fares are already the same price no matter the time though.
Also, it looks cheaper to book a return freedom fare and then cancel the return leg if you just wanted to fly one way

Not all Flexi fares are equal. Fare buckets can vary and this can be an issue.

e.g. If you book into L class, you may need L class to flex into. Closer to a flight, say only generally more expensive B class may be available.
