Hi all,
Planning to travel with a 6 month infant with wife from SYD to NRT, and wondered what the best way is using my existing points. I have read some airlines charge 10% of fare whilst others do not charge.

I have points in Lifemiles, QFF, Asia Miles, AA, Krisflyer.

Preference is to use J class. Route will be SYD-NRT then HKG-SYD

Thanks!

A recent booking for two passengers and one infant made for SYD-LAX return with Qantas points flying American Airlines did not incur additional points but included the usual taxes/fees.

SQ charges 10% so QF is a better option for the infant component. Check CX as their taxes are usually quite low.

Whichever airline you book the award seats (regardless of FF points you use) with you just contact that airline direct to book the infant ticket

Qantas do not charge points or taxes for infant in an award booking.

On my recent booking Qantas charged adult taxes for an infant, a follow up phone call identified this and the charges are now reduced from $143 to $22

About to do a similar trip. Most airlines charge 10% but good perk of qantas program is no charge except some tiny amount of taxes. Its also seems to be 10% only on international flights and normally free on domestic

A one world ecplorer award is good value potentially. The other thing is that asia miles redemptions on JAL need to be return

I got caught out with this the other day. Searched for awards BKK-SIN-SYD the other day and couldn't include infant in booking. Would I need to call and add infant? Could be an expensive exercise as I was looking at business class award.

Yes, you need to call to add an infant. Sometimes you can get lucky and they charge the economy rate

Do they do a Qantas and value the revenue fare at last minute walk up rates?

Yes you need to call up to book, you can't do online. Definitely more expensive with SQ infant fare, especially on J and F tickets.
