Rewards ticket downgraded to Y - and then refunded?

Hi all,

Partner and I were travelling PER-MEL-SYD on two J class rewards tickets recently.

Upon arriving at the lounge in MEL we became aware that we'd been downgraded from J to Y for the MEL-SYD sector (annoying but hardly the end of the world). Staff at the lounge were very apologetic and absolutely lovely - couldn't fault them. Had a laksa and went on my merry way.

Today, I've checked my points balance -it is showing "CANCELLED - CLASSIC FLIGHT 1 ADT REF xx_xx_ ON REDEMPTION" with a credit of 41,500 points (which is exactly how much I paid in points per person for the total itinerary PER-SYD, and the PNR (redacted here) matches my original booking) and then a charge of a "CLASSIC REWARD REFUND FEE" of 6,000 points.

Is this how rewards downgrade refunds are working now? Seems odd to show up as CANCELLED in my points history when I definitely travelled.
I'm more than happy with 35,500 points as compensation - but frankly surprised.

Has anyone else experienced this? I'm not sure if it's a new standard or if someone at QF has done a boo boo (not complaining either way - just curious!)

You flew for free …. Don’t make a fuss :-)

It’s been processed incorrectly but I’d just keep quiet about it and take it as a win.
No that seems correct in my mind. The QF policy is always to refund the difference between business and economy on the sector downgraded factoring in the length of that sector in terms of the entire trip length. Since the distance between MEL> SYD is significantly greater than that of PER > MEL then a refund of the entire amount is due, less the cost of the PER > MEL flight which is roughly 6,000 in J.

At least that’s how I think the opaque downgrade policy applies here.

Say what ?

PER-MEL is approx 3500km
MEL-SYD is 870km

I think you’ve got lost somewhere

The OP joined AFF a year ago and has 16 posts. Whilst QF know who a few of us are on here I seriously doubt they have the knowledge or desire to look up any of this and rectify it.
Not his specific case but more broadly any favourable IT glitches.

For my experience, they didn't refund me at all and I had to go chasing them up for my points refund for downgrading (and they wouldn't give me my taxes back).

I'm kind of...amazed that the incompetence can actually work in a passengers favour.

Happy to take the points and shut up though!
Ive had quite a bit of extra SC over the last membership year and current one. They all had a lot of work attached to them though so I think of it as payment for all the HUACA I've had to do.
