Has anyone used a cheap booking site to book airfares? I have googled and several come up and just wondered if they are worth looking at. I am looking to book Rio de Janeiro to Sydney one way.

Book direct if you can unless the online travel agency offers a large discount. And check what you're buying too (as things like checked luggage may not be included in the 'cheap' fare).

Further, if anything goes wrong/needs to be changed, you'll probably be in for a world of pain (and often expensive service fees) as everything generally needs to go through the agent until about 24 hours before departure.

Thank you very much. Good point. I’m not going until next year so think I will do that.

What have you found when looking?

Beware of rouge OTA's with offers to good to be true. Once you give them your credit card details the chances of getting $ back are low
They could be
  • "selling" award flights with ff miles they purchased.
  • Tickets that not "connected" Just separate end on end tickets at some intermediate airport
  • Tickets that are, in the background return, but presented to you as one way
  • various other scam tickets
Most obvious is LATAM GIG-SCL-SYD and EK GIG-DXB-SYD. Many others via USA or EU/UK.
LATAM also fly SCL-MEL. May be less $, as many people think Australia=Sydney.
Are more airlines from São Paulo GRU. Even Air China (Beijing). And QR Qatar who do not fly from GIG [reference wikipedia]

For any transit airport the visa requirements, if any, are your responsibility. Check before you buy.

A return may be cheaper. Would be sad if you occidentally missed the return.
