So one of the best ways to see the USA is to drive through great parts of it at your own pace. For some there's something attractive about stopping at your own choice of diners, cheap motels, bars, truck stops, little towns, big cities, national parks, and natural landmarks. For the budget conscious combining transportation hire fees with your accommodation fees, via a camper or RV, could be the most efficient way to road trip USA. It also provides you with some certainty about where you'll be sleeping. You're able to buy basic supplies and store and cook food at your own discretion.
We see so many happy backpackers in Australia getting about in their "Wicked" vans and other similar campers. Making use of public facilities and cooking out beside their van at beaches, major car parks or other suitable (and unsuitable) sites.
Can Australians recreate a similar experience in the US?
A big country, so many options, different rules, standards and regulations. I have heard in areas where there are plenty of camping grounds, paying and parking up to have a kip is easy, and if formal grounds are not available then people often park up in large car parks like Wal-Mart. Naturally, the experiences will vary and it seems preparation, adequete budgeting and organisation are the keys to success. What are the general rules and what advice can be given to people interested in road-tripping USA in an RV or camper?
Wicked have a presence in the US, but only in the West. This makes it difficult if you're looking at a one way run across the country, or starting somewhere in the south or east. There are many RV and large camper hire companies, but if you're researching them, where do you start? What do you look out for? Who's safe and reliable? And when planning your trip what general rules should you apply?
