I took a Nokia 6300 to Canada and Alaska, first in 2010 via LAX where I was able, using a product called "Roaming Sim" obtained Carnegie, Melbourne. to sms to vancouver via Tmobile, the 6300 is a 900/1800/1900. band phone and the recipient was on Rogers in Canada, however in Canada I could only text but not 'phone, but could receive both? upon leaving Canada I was advised by a Rogers rep that I was piggybacking in their 850 band to sms but I could not "stretch" it to "phone out, and am looking at maybe a Nokia 6720 to cover this if going again as it appears to have all 4 bands.

Welcome to the Community!

Why do you want a phone? How you want to use a phone may actually decide that perhaps you should take a smartphone instead and research prepaid SIMs in Country. Skype, SMS, calls in, photos, etc?

I took my Nokia Lumia 920 (Windows Phone 8) to Europe at Christmas. When I had a SIM that worked locally and configured by a local (ie Austria), it was awesome. Key thing was data for me - uploading photos, FourSquare and texting the other half on the who was on the beginner slopes. The hotel had free Wifi, which was good for Skype. Some of the augmented reality stuff built in can be really cool in opening your eyes to what's around the corner. Used this to great effect in Sydney recently when I was craving some Darwin style food (ie Indonesian) when I was surrounded by coffee shops and Japanese restaurants - and had eaten Japanese two times the day before. I found a Malaysian Restaurant around the corner just by turning on the Here City Lens app (exclusive to Nokia) and holding it up using the combo of compass, GPS and a small amount of data.

Trickiest thing with smartphones is finding Prepaid SIMS. North America is not big on Prepaid compared with Australia, but at least there is only two countries (US and Canada) - unlike the European plethora.
