I have found a Helsinki - BKK business reward via Haneda at 17:25 next september. Coming from Rome the flight is only due to land at 15:35 hence qantas wont issue these tickets together... i assume this is cutting it close to book these seperate legs as if something happens i am well up sh&t creek without a paddle..

Safer to fly the day before or risk it? Anyone know how long transit time through Helsinki airport is?

A little hard to follow.

Is it:

Rome > Helsinki > Haneda > Bangkok

You originate in Rome and land in HEL at 15:35 and Depart for HND at 17:25?

Helsinki is an easy airport to transit, but note that you will be going from Schengen to Non Schengen which means passport control etc at Helsinki.

A little tight for my liking in this post covid environment. Any delay on the rome flight and you're cactus. Is there an earlier flight out of Rome?

It seems possible but I wouldn't risk a 2-booking 2 hour connection, especially considering that if you miss the connection, you're stuck trying to get to Bangkok at your own expense. That's not going to be cheap.

If you're already having to buy two tickets you may as well look at other airline options too that maybe get you there with a few more hours to spare, if your only options with rewards are that ticket or the day before. Cash flights in Europe are usually quite cheap as it is.

This is why I guess qantas won’t show them as a joint trip. Bit of a shame but maybe an excuse to spend a night in finland and see the city

I think it’s more likely married segments that’s preventing you booking that.

HEL has super short minimum connection times. For those flights it would be 35 minutes.
It’s a very slick operation there.

If your bags are checked through and you clear the passport control smoothly, a 45 min transit is all good in Helsinki (20-30 mins between gates + boarding). Though, please note that JAL may depart from a bus gate, i.e. you'll want an extra 15 mins for the boarding (if it's JAL you're using ex-HEL).
In your case, I'd be more worried of getting out of Rome on time so you'll arrive in Helsinki, as planned.
