Rookie Mistake

Had the joy of completing a DONE4 Friday with my last leg on QF10 from LHR to MEL. I had applied for an upgrade to First about 60 days out and was lucky enough for it to come through. 60,000 points seemed a reasonable trade for a fully flat bed bed and a decent glass of champers (Charles Heidsieck Blanc Des Millenaires 1995).

The Concorde room and T4 was the usual complete zoo. The flight itself was quite good though it was really bumpy from SIN to MEL. Had to dive for the champers glass at one point!

When I got home I realised my mistake. I needed 240 SC's for partner gold. The SC's I forfeited by upgrading was 240! Somewhere along the line I had decided that points and SC's for business class travel were awarded even if upgraded. Picture a small amount of forehead slapping here.

Given the arguments on here about going for status I would like to say that I will never do extra flying to obtain partner gold but I would have forgone an upgrade. My Dad will just have to survive a NB.

If you were on a paid business class ticket, and used your points for a J->F upgrade, then (to the best of my knowledge) you were completely correct in your original assumption - you should be credited the business class SC's for that flight.

Have you checked to see if they've posted yet?

Cheers,
- Febs.

Even though you got the upgrade to F you should still receive SCs and FF points for your original booked airfare which in this case is business class.

A call to the QFF service centre should get you on your way to Partner Gold.

You were completely correct. When upgrading, you do not forfeit points/SC's for the originally booked fare - you should still get the J SC's.

It's a well known issue that often when upgrading, the computer assumes you were travelling on an award (Z/U class ATM) and give no points nor SC's.

A call to Qantas should do the trick - tell them you were originally booked in revenue Business Class (D) and should get credited as such.

Thanks very much and this will keep the old man (and mum) happy on their upcoming retirement odyssey.

Hi,

I wasn't aware that DONEx were upgradeable? Do you pay to upgrade a leg or can you use points?

Thanks

As in any noram QFF points upgrade, a Qantas Frequent Flyer on a DONE4 can request to upgrade flights with QF flight numbers on Qantas metal using QFF points. Whether the flight is part of a DONEx or LONEx itinerary is irrelevant.

The OP applied to upgrade his QF10 flight from LHR to MEL using 60,000 QFF points. The upgrade came through.

The fare cannot be upgraded for an individual segment through payment of cash, except for BA WT to WT+ segments. However, you can use the miles/points from an FF account for the operating airline (providing using the same airline's flight code).
