Would an AAdvatange award of PER-SYD-SIN-HKG be valid if there is a more direct PER-SYD-HKG route available? My thinking is trying to do PER-SYD (QAN J) - SIN (BA F) - HKG (CX F) for 45 000 AA miles :)

Also what is the layover rules? Is it 24 hours like US airways, or is it shorter? It appears that BA16 arrives in SIN at 9:30PM and the connecting flights to HKG are the next day around 1:15AM

If flights are available, you can choose whatever route you want, including your 3 segment J/F/F example.
Connection times for international are usually 24 hours.
