Row 40 (Y) on 4 class 744

I'm looking to fly MEL-LHR in Y in a few months and due to the travel days unfortunately the A388 is not an option. It's likely I'll take the 744 via HKG.

I'm tall so legroom is the priority. It looks like row 40 is a good option if I don't want to pay for an exit row. I've read some reports but am wondering if anyone has any pics of this row?

Yes, I do. This image was taken from seat 40A on board the QF Boeing 747-400 VH-OJG.

I'm about 172cm tall and I'm seated with my back flush against the seat back and stretching my right leg as far as I can from that position. That should give you an idea of how much space there is in the bulkhead.

From my assessment, there was quite some room in the bulkhead, but I am comparatively a short man.

I can't remember if the bulkhead in the middle section (DEFG) has a cut out in the bottom. Couldn't tell from the pax sitting there either, since they were all munchkins.

There is a cutout/indent at the bottom of the front row 26 WHY seats in the 2 class 744's.

40G has the cutout - at least on the kangaroo config - which at 183cm is amazingly comfortable.. well for economy class anyway.

Seat Guru has been incorrect before.

Going by the image above, it may be incorrect here.

Definitely is a cut-out on the DEFG seats. Not sure about ABC. HJK is crew rest.

There were no 4-class configs when I wrote that list so this config didn't exist then. My preferred Y seat on that aircraft config is 40G.

I was recently in 40D on a 4-class 744 LHR-SIN, best Y seat I have ever had. With my legs fully extended I could not touch the back of the cutout and there was enough room for 40E to get out without me moving.

Just in case anyone was interested I also took notes for some other recent bulkhead seats:

QF 744 4-class(v1) LHR-SIN
40ABC - cutout, legroom looked excellent
40DEFG - cutout, excellent legroom (sat in seat)
40HJK - crew rest

QF 744 2-class SIN-FRA
26ABC - cutout, excellent legroom (sat in seat)
26DEFG - no cutout, bassinet, legroom looked restricted
26HJK - did not make any observations

QF 333 PER-SIN
23ABC - no cutout, restricted legroom (sat in seat)
23DEFG - no cutout, bassinet, good legroom (sat in seat)
23HJK - did not make any observations


Note that these observations are from a guy who isn't very tall, very tall people would probably find 23DEFG on the 333 restrictive.

My pref would be 40G. I much rather the aisle seat and its quite dark due to the crew rest next to you. There will be a little bit of traffic from the Y+ cabin in front as they are supposed to use the Y toilets just behind row 40. I found it fine and was not troubled by any noise from the lav behind.

I prefer an aisle seat to a window. 40G is quiet and dark (good for sleeping or just watching a movie) due to the crew rest at 40HJK.

Flight was QF63 SYD-JNB taken in early October 2009.

The 747s can have slightly different configurations, which includes the build of the bulkheads (even within the fleet of 4-class 747s, of which the aircraft I was flying was).

Here is a photo of 40D from a few months ago (i also take photos on my flights to compare legroom). I am 6 feet tall and when i stretch as far as i can, can just touch the wall of the cutout. It is a very comfortable seat, one of my favs.

The downside of DEFG is that the seats don't recline as much as normal, due to the toilet wall behind you. Its not bad enough to be a problem though. The upside of the toilets is enhanced feeling of privacy, and no one behind to bump you. G is particularly private due to the crew rest nearby.
