Can't find any trip reports on here - anybody got must do's for Charleston and Savannah and any idea how long I should stay there (and where to stay) - will be there towards the end of September this year

Both lovely places. I was there last September. Just strolling around the old areas is nice. I though Savannah was in some ways more pretty with it's many squares with oak trees covered in Spanish moss.

Peoples' accommodation preferences vary widely, but I stayed at this quaint place in Savannah: 17hundred90 Inn & Restaurant and liked it. It was also very moderately priced.

I met some up-country S Carolina friends in Charleston and we stayed out of town because they use this place for business quite often: The Inn at Middleton Place. It's an old plantation estate. It was good and interesting but may not suit because of the location.

Be prepared for the afternoon thunderstorm downpours at that time of the year.

If you are into the cupcake fad, this is definitely the place to go: Sugar Bakeshop. Normally, I don't go for sweet stuff, but these cupcakes were SERIOUSLY good and very inventive.

Sorry posted too quickly.. It was some years ago now but I can remember having a great meal of ribs at sticky fingers restaurant in Charleston. Preferred Savannah though, really beautiful. Read Midnight in the garden of good and evil or watch the Kevin Spacey movie to get a feel for the place.

Thanks for the feedback from Timtammi and John M - debating whether to hire a car or use public transport - any thoughts? Also - is two days in each enough.

The reason I'm going to Savannah is because I read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - never keen on watching the movie after I've read the book but might just to get myself even more excited.

We didn't have a car in either place as we were amtraking it and I don't remember it being a problem. Mind you it was quite a few years ago but I remember both places as being fairly compact and easy to get around.

I rented a car - in Richmond Virginia, as I was doing extensive travel in the region. Having a car is always my preference for the freedom.

Each place is compact, so a car within the towns would not be necessary.

I would think two days in each is enough.

I have spent a few days in Charleston, it is a nice place...but had friends there.
The Battery is like a sea front esplanade good to walk along, there is a fancy pineapple fountain there and many statues and old guns.
Fort Sumter is where the first shots of the US Civil War were fired, do on a boat tour. Interesting.
Patriots Point has an old Aircraft Carrier with planes on it, can walk nearly everywhere on it.
Many Southern Plantation type estates around the area and lots of old fancy houses in the city area.
Many churches and old buildings as well.
They have a decent museum too.

Savannah has similar fancy houses and plantations and also visit Chipewa Square, where Forest Gump was filmed waiting for the bus, and the church where the feather floats down is nearby as well.
Saw the square and did a general trolley tour and left...to go to Charleston.
