Some times when I check in a bit early for at the next generation kiosks at the airport it offers to change me to an earlier flight. Although not always.

Some times flying direct BNE-MEL (or vice-versa) it offers an indirect route BNE-SYD and then SYD-MEL. Usually this option will leave BNE before my original flight but scheduled to make it to MEL after the original flight. So not much point taking it, except traveling via wide body jet.

I was just wondering what SC and FF point earn would you get if choosing to go via SYD. Would it be that same as originally booked or would they be earned as if you booked two separate flights?

If it was me I would give It a go and see what happens...Keep your bp's and if you don't get them ring QF and ask the question.

Your QFF earnings are based on each segment and the marketing carrier, the operating carrier and booking class thereof.

Going in Economy QF Metal/flight BNE-xSYD-MEL will earn 20 SC and 2000 QFF points. Going BNE-MEL will earn 15 SC's and at least 1000 QFF points. (WP get ~1700)

Whenever QuickCheck or the NGCI kiosks have offered me a new flight my online booking has changed to reflect the cancelled flight and the new flight and the SCs and FF points have posted for the changed flight.

Now in my experience it has always been SYD-BNE or vv so have not been offered an alternate routing but if your booking is changed then I believe you will earn SCs and FF points for the new routing BNE-SYD-MEL rather than the direct BNE-MEL routing. And going the other way if you already have a BNE-SYD-MEL booking and NGCI offers BNE-MEL direct then you should be able to request Original Routing Credit from Qantas.
