Hi all, I want do SYD-HAN in J in January, as direct as possible, preferably on OW. JQ seems to be a nightmare (connections), QF and CX prohibitive. Vietnam Air seems very well priced, but it's not OW, and I'm not sure how good it is. I did however see one fare advertised with QF and Vietnam via Melbourne, but from what I've seen here even if the flight was codeshared, J is not, so I wouldn't get SC's.

I wouldn't mind going via SIN or HKG for stopovers, but don't want any additional domestic legs. Don't really want to include SAI but not a deal-breaker. Any ideas? Thanks!

Vietnam airlines is pretty grim. I did SYD to HAN via Saigon earlier this year, Vietnam there and Jetstar back, and I'd fly Jetstar in preference.

I've flown VN a few times in J (MEL-SGN) and would prefer them over JQ 'Star class'. But you'll miss the points/SC's .....

CX just seemed v expensive in J compared to Vietnam Air - about twice the price (maybe I calculated it wrong), and the advantage of a direct SYD-HAN seems great. As I understand it JQ doesn't fly direct to Vietnam anyway, and the most direct routing via Darwin doesn't have Starclass. Has anyone tried Vietnam J?

I too have been looking at best way from Sydney to Vietnam in J.

Best J option seems to be Malaysia Airlines which from memory are currently on sale for around $3800. Obviously wouldn't earn SCs, but I'm not travelling until December so hoping that perhaps MH might have joined OW by then.

Haven't flown Vietnam Air before but have heard from many people that their J product is bad. Might be ok for a day flight (one way?)

Wouldn't the QF codeshare on Vietnam Air earn SCs and points?

I guess that waiting until January 2013 when Malaysian will be a member is no good ?

I've done this trip a few times and fly to BKK or SIN on QF and then get a LCC (Air Asia) to connect.

Here is a report with images from when I flew them late last year

Thanks munitalP - I had already read your report with interest. As for waiting till Jan '13, I'm looking at a conference in Jan '12 (being a largely self-funded traveller, I need those tax deductions!). Intrigued about the Malaysia Airlines idea (never been to KL or elsewhere in Malaysia, but love the food).
