When I was flying out of Adelaide domestically this morning, the check-in girl happened to mention she recalled my name because she assigned my seat (exit row) while doing seat assignments yesterday afternoon.

I was under the impression it was all computerised, but it would seem its at least partly (or perhaps more, i didnt get time to find out too much) done by hand to ensure those with status get their preferences.

Does anyone know much about this, i'm just curious as everything i've read on here seems to indicate its automated?

Not sure how it works but as an SG I can't complain.

Last week I did CBR-MEL-PER and was allocated the exit row aisle on the first leg and a bulk head aisle on the second. Because of the first leg I ws unable to print my BP via OLCI.

On the return journey I asked the GA for and was given the exit row aisle of the PER-SYD leg.

I believe there is a manual pre-allocation done before the computer takes over and allocates the rest. I recall a story of a friend who needed a certain seat for reasons I won't discuss, and had a note put into the PNR of the booking. He was allocated that (domestic) seat by staff before the computer took over and allocated the rest.

Perhaps an Emergency Exit needed to be allocated due to the number of passengers on the flight, and you were the lucky one.

Can't really comment about how often or how much is actually manually assigned.

I expect its the emergency exits that are done manually, and perhaps only on very full flights.

Actually on the CBR-MEL flight cited above the flight was probably only half full and every row in front of me had at least the middle seat empty.

It was very early on Sunday morning.

Not complaining, indeed very happy it came out that way.

From what I gather there is some manual intervention in the process, and I had heard that on some lightly loaded planes someone gets to check the weight distributions and so on.
