Hi all,

I'm heading to New York on QF107 later this year and am trying to get myself a good seat. Of course, being just an NB for now means that's a little harder than normal. I'm currently in 25A on one of the 52J 744s (that's what model it is according to Checkmytrip), but I'd really like to be upstairs.

Could some kind soul please check E/F for seat availability in J on QF107 on Dec 18th please? I'm currently umming and ahhing about getting myself an E/F sub, but would prefer to wait until closer to the travel date - I promise I won't ask this sort of thing again!!

Hopefully the seats I'd like are available and I'll be able to get one of my folks (who have far better status than me) to call up Qantas and beg a favour. Well, that's the plan. :)

Hope asking this isn't considered bad form.
Cheers.

Unless they are travelling with you their status will mean zip, zilch, nada:!:

I am seeing only 13B as available upstairs, while downstairs there are 15 seats free, but that will change no doubt given its the last Friday before XMas.

What I posted is what Expertflyer returns for the flight (FWIW, it's the same for SYD-LAX and LAX-JFK)

E/F is more accurate for Qantas in that it shows those seats that are:

occupied-seat.gif
- Occupied

blocked-seat.gif
- Unoccupied but Q-Blocked (for Status, Exit, Bassinet)

free-seat.gif
- Unallocated.

One example is that Qantas seat selection rarely shows D seats on lower deck as being available as most of these are marked as "handicapped-accessible" seats.

See here:

E/F sometimes shows these seats with a special symbol (sometimes not):

Note that Qantas seat selection maps vary for each passenger depending specific criteria (e.h. status, fare bucket, PAX PCV).

Unless you have a booking on the flight, how do you see seat selection for this flight.

I have a booking through to NY, but its likely to change later today as I am now needed in HKG.

Thanks very much for looking them up. It seems there are still some unoccupied seats upstairs, hopefully I can get one of those.
My folks aren't travelling with me, no, but fingers crossed they can achieve something for me!
Quite a concidence we would have been on the same flight!

Well my folks called to ask about this and was told that all the upstairs seats were occupied, as were the front two rows of J downstairs. I find this pretty hard to believe this far out and given the E/F info shown here. I'm surprised that was the response, I'd understand them saying "reserved for senior frequent flyers, I'm afraid I can't allocate one to your son" (I'm under no illusions that this is a favour being asked of QF), but to say they're actually occupied? Seems odd.

Apparently the person at the Premium Desk was pretty rude and dismissive though, my father said he'd call back later and hope for someone having a better day... But not great service for one of their more valuable customers.

estate,

Don't be too hard on QF, if they extended the status benefits to family they would increase the top tier customers by a factor of 10 for every WP, assuming mum/dad/inlaws/kids.

I would be happy with any seat in J as a lot of people fly Y and will never experience the comforts of J.

YMMV

I don't want to sound harsh about Qantas for saying no to the request - not at all - I have no sense of entitlement or aything with this. My only criticism is the manner in which they conveyed their response. Mum said she was a bit offended to be spoken to like that, and I wondered what other people's experiences of speaking with the QF's premium desk had been like.

And the reason for posting it here was simply to note the apparent contradiction between the availability as shown on E/F, and the statements made by QF on the phone. One says seats are unoccupied but blocked, the other says all occupied.

I have never flown J in my adult life, so I can assure you, I'm well and truly looking forward to it and not taking any part of it for granted (there's a large hole in my wallet that reminds me continuously...). I'm just curious as to the strange response given, and a bit put off by the manner in which they gave it.

estate,

Perhaps QF merely say occupied because not everyone would understand blocked/reserved for premium customers so saying occupied conveys the same meaning "not for you!" but without the long explanation of status.

I personally don't think there is a bad J seat, some may be better but I will take any J seat over any Y seat anyday.

On the tone, I would say they are constantly being asked questions like "can you seat my grandma in an exit row" and similar so are well trained to be short and end the conversation so as not to waste time. I may not agree with this but I can understand they are very busy.

Enjoy your flight.

I fully concur.

estate, what time of the day did the call happen and was it answered "Qantas Premium". (There is no "Platinum" desk)

Ah I see, yes perhaps they just didn't want to go through the explanation. Fair enough, although I would point out that that reasoning would have to have been known to my mother, otherwise she would have told me to make the call myself! :)

She didn't have the right number, and so rang the general QF phone number about 3pm today I believe, asked to be put through to the Chairman's Lounge, and was then transferred to someone who apparently answered "You've got the premium desk".

edit - spelling.

Re your comments about being full so far away, I have just booked my business class fares for my Circle Asia Fare for next year and can already see that on some of the flights there are heavy loads.

Good luck with your travel
