I've noticed when booking online often seats show up as being taken but often on the actual flight they are empty. (Domestic flights)
I doubt there would be that many 'no shows', which leads me to think they've been reserved for 'last minute' purposes if required by Virgin.
For example, I've been trying to get row 3 without success, even though I clearly see people sitting in them without a flexi fare at least.
Or did they book through a travel agent?

Do you have status? As a gold, I get access to row 3 even on a saver fare

Row 3 is reserved for Gold/Plat members, and failing that, pax on flexi fares.

Also, for what it's worth, this is the seat layout for trans-Tasman flights operated by DJ -- I believe it's broadly similar for domestic services, I've just never seen it documented anywhere:

ASH2437-Alliance-Trade-Brochure-AUS.PDF (page 10 of 13).jpg

The red seats ("suit zone") are reserved for pax with status (Plat first, gold next, silver last); the light-grey ones ("airport use only") are reserved for allocation by check-in staff only, so there's a chance that you could ask for one of those seats at check-in if you really want it. The light-grey block on the right is *always* reserved on the online seat selection system for domestic flights too.

Thanks for the replies. I will be Gold as soon as Virgin processes my latest flight status credits.
Will see whether I can get Row 3 now :)

I've just booked seats to Syd-LAX and all seat options were selectable including the exit rows at no extra cost. I am gold FF.

I'm same, I'm Gold and almost always fly wholesale or saver fares and couldn't tell you the last time I couldn't get 3C

Probably not online if you made the booking before you hit gold. You might have to ring them for that

With Gold and now Platinum, I've always got Row 3 (and an upgrade sometimes to Row 2)

I always get row 3 too. But, maybe just good luck with so many of us competing for the same.
