I am booking flights from Melbourne to Nandi. As a first time flyer when are you able to select seats. Is this part of the booking process? As someone with no experience of booking seats how do you go about selecting which seat. I know that most of you know the cabin layout given your frequent flights. But as a newbie what criteria are important in getting the best seat. And is this seat guaranteed or is there some seat allocation process over which the passenger has no control over.

Seating selection on non QF airlines can be different.
From your other post MEL-NAN award would be on FJ with FJ prime flight number. May need to go FJ manage booking to select seat.
Seat selection on code shares can be more problematic. Some times OK, Other time hard

This is a longstanding complaint about QFF's booking engine. It will in fact do the same thing with much more extreme cases, like say CBR-MEL in business connecting to MEL-LAX in economy, as a "business" result.

Some other airlines do this, but they usually make it much clearer and/or allow you to filter for all-business.

If you want to see the seat layout on any particular flight prior to selecting just use - Airline Seat Maps, Flights shopping and Flight information- Best Airplane Seats - SeatGuru

That is generally a poor seat site.
Aerolopa is more up to date, but not airlines. Is--->Hola - aeroLOPA | Detailed aircraft seat plans

Airlines often/usually have seat maps. But can be hard to find on airline web sites.
Hence seatguru.com seatmaps.com, seatmaestro.com Aerolopa.com etc
