Does selecting one's seat online for QF longhaul international have any impact on pending upgrade requests? I.e. selecting your seat in the original purchased class of travel in case upgrade does not come through.

I doubt it. I'm not really sure what your question is. If you don't get free seat selection then you have very little chance of getting the upgrade. But even with free seat selection you definitely need to make sure you have a good seat in the paid class of travel.

I once had a QF staffer at the LAX T4 A/C advise me that to improve the chances of my upgrade, I should pick a seat as close to the front as possible. No joke.
She may have had a friend on the same flight who wanted my seat (80A).. I mean what are the other reasons for giving such "advice" like that?

It may make sense if you select a bassinet seat and if it turns out it's needed at short notice, maybe it'll be easier to op-up you?

I was lucky enough to be op-up'ed in the last 2 long-hauls from Y to Y+. I selected the first or the second row of Y originally.

What was your status at the time? I'm guessing you may have been on busy long haul routes (Australia-LHR or LAX)?

I was a plain WP, one was SYD-LAX and the other JNB-SYD. I was upgraded quite a few hours prior to departure for my JNB flight. It wasn't an aircraft swap either because the original seat/config was still there.
